Nurse Joy Round 1
Ralts
Ralt's Trace: Ralts' ability becomes static
Ralts' Initiative: D6 + 3 Dex + 1 Survival = +4 mod
Ralts' Move: Growl
Accuracy: 3 dex + 0 fight + 0 canalize/contest (either specialty is fine but i feel canalize is simpler) = 3 dice
Effect: Lower all opposing pokemon's strength by 1
Cottonee
Cottonee's initiative: D6 + 2 dex + 1 survival (only rolled once per battle per pokemon) = +3 mod
Cottonee's move: fairy wind vs pikachu
accuracy: 2 dex + 0 fight + 0 canalize = 2 dice
damage: 1 str +2 + 1STAB = 4 dice, -1 for Defense (nurse joy always holds back a bit) = 3 dice
Pikachu
Pikachu's initiative: d6 + 2 dex = +2 mod
Pikachu's move: Growl
Accuracy: 2dex +2 fight + 1 canalize
Effect: Lower all opposing pokemon's strength by 1
Tangela
Tangela's initiative: d6 + 2dex = +2 mod
Tangela's move: vine whip on Ralts
Accuracy: 2dex + 2 fight + 0 brawl
damage 2str +2 + 1STAB = 5 dice, -1 for Defense = 4 dice
Nurse Joy calls out her commands in a clipped, professional tone as her Pokemon appear in the battle room. She is precise of speech and rapid to respond to a changing battlefield.
Chansey stands by in an adorable nurse hat.
"Pikachu! Growl! Work up an echo! Tangela, use Vine Whip to trip Ralts!"
Initiatives:
Pikachu (5) + 2 = 7
Tangela (5) +2 = 7
Ralts (1) +4 = 5
Cottonee (2) +3 = 5
I can't find anything in the book about ties, so ties will go to the Pokemon whose trainer has higher Dex. If that's a tie, I'll go to Bulbapedia and see which Poke is Speedier.
Pikachu races from one end of the room to another, growling ferociously. The echos rebound off the plexiglass and swarm the party's Pokemon, making little Pikachu sound almost like a fierce cave bear.
Pikachu's Growl's Accuracy: (1)(5)(4)(4)(1) - three successes, but one is eliminated from the two 1's, so it hits. -1Str for all party Pokemon.
Tangela's vines do not move. At first, you think Tangela has disboyed its trainer. Then as Ralts moves into position to attack in turn, the vines suddenly whip out to trip Ralts.
Tangela's Vine's Accuracy: (3)(1)(2)(4) - 1 success, still a hit.
Damage: (2)(5)(4)(6) - 3 successes = 3 damage to Ralts!
Ralts lifts its head from the floor to Growl in turn.
Accuracy: (2)(1)(6) - 1 success, hit. -1 Str for all Pokemon on the battlefield now.
Cottonee spreads its leaves like wings and lets the fairy wind blow!
Accuracy: (6)(1) - 1 success, hit.
Damage: (2)(3) - no successes, no damage! Sorry.
In summary: Ralts takes 3 damage, all Pokemon lose 1 on their damage rolls for the rest of the scene.
I hope I did this right! It's a lot to process. I'm sure it will get easier though.
Round 2 begin!
Oh!
Ralts eats the Oran Berry to heal 1HP
Ekans Round 1

Flinch *3*
Togepi
Init: d6+4

Bold Ekans
Init: d6+ 2dex +2 survival
Move: Glare on Oshawatt
accuracy: 2dex +1 fight + 0 intimidate -1 accuracy
effect: paralyze
Growlithes' Intimidate: -2 to enemy dmg rolls
Initiatives
Togepi (6) +4 = 10
Oshawatt (5) +3 = 8
Ekans (3) +4 = 7
Growlithe (1) + 3 =4
Togepi
Charm
Accuracy: (6), success!
Bold Ekans now has -4 on dmg rolls
Ekans speeds forward, darting from a tussock to cross the shorter grass at amazing speed, a streak of purple lightning, much larger than a new trainer might imagine. Longer than the tallest member of your party. Stopping short as not one but two trained Growlithe appear, the snake takes a moment to find its courage again. It backs away into cover again.
Oshawatt springs on its grassy tussock in a full body tackle.
Oshawatt
Tackle
Accuracy: (4)(4) - 2 successes, hit
Damage: (5)(2)(6) - 2 successes, Ekans takes 2 damage
The wake of Oshawatt's passage parts the tussock. Suddenly two amber eyes are glaring out of the grass, point blank in Oshawatt's face.
Bold Ekans
Glare
Accuracy: (5)(3) - 1 success, hit
Oshawatt is Paralyzed - for 24 hours, he loses 2 dex and moves slowly.
Ekans rears forth from the grass, ready to strike - but then it sees Togepi, doing something cute, wandering carelessly in the grass. Its golden eyes soften. A single tear falls from its eye - wait, no, that's venom, and it's dripping from Ekans' fangs. This battle is not over yet.
Growlithe Winston
Bite
Accuracy: (4)(4)(5)(2)(6)(4) - 5 successes!! CRITICAL HIT!
Dmg: 4-1+2 (5)(4)(4)(2)(3) - Ekans takes 3 damage! Total 5.
Flinch: (4)(6)(2) Ekans flinches!
Growlithe sinks his jaws into the Ekans. Wisps of black smoke wind up from his mouth as his internal fire does battle with the venomous blood of Ekans. The snake goes nearly limp, and Growlithe looks to his master for permission to shake his prey.
Surprise Stealthy Ekans
Another Ekans sneaks up behind the party. The Trillium officer's Growlithe smells its musty scent just in time, but Stealthy Ekans will have the drop next round!
Summary: Oshawatt is Paralyzed, Bold Ekans has 2 hp remaining and is flinched, Stealthy Ekans has arrived!
Round 2 begins!!
again, let me know if you think I messed up.
„
Well done, we just need to work a little to hit harder! I believe...“ Once one has gotten used to it, this wasn't particularly difficult. Not yet. The move pool she could choose from was still sorta limited, thankfully the current one provided two STAB and was not completely useless. Once the real battles started, and the opponent came along with a carefully selected move pool and the possibility to boost rocket-high, things will rather quickly look much different.
What next...? Ah! How about trying out something that seems to be popular among the Veterans? „Okay, please do take care not to get hurt for now, and try to figure out what the opponent's up to. Be especially careful not to get in touch with that Pikachu, you might end up paralyzed! Same goes for your ally Ralts, very sorry about that, but it's likely that it has traced this feature!“
Initiative: 4 dice
Orders for this round: Evade any attacks by enemies; if they both use non-damaging moves, use Fairy Wind against Pikachu again.
Effect: Hopefully taking no damage; inflicting damage if using Fairy Wind.
Secondary Effect: None
Accuracy Roll: 2 Dexterity + 0 Fight = 2
Damage Roll: 1 Strength + 2 Power +1 because of STAB -1 because of Pika's Growl = 3
Additional notes: None
(IRON, in case you spot any errors in my stuff, feel all free to contact and correct me! Or just do so as your roll out the rounds.)
(In case you people might wonder, she has a Knowledge-Skill of 3 for a reason. ^^ On the other hand, 0 in practical fighting. Nyee. *shrugs*)
(Ah, I personaly don't care much about special battle themes, so don't expect me to share many. If any. For this enounter though, this one will probably do.)
(EDIT: Better now...?)
(Nurse Joy's real Vitality is like 5, but for training purposes it's 1 - that's what I mean by holding back)
If you've taken damage, now's a good time to review Pain Penalizations on page 45. Abilities like Oshawatt's Torrent will activate now.
Your character sheet can automatically calculate pain penalizations (except certain numbers might resolve a little wrongly - like if you have 4 hp and lose 2, the spreadsheet doesn't know whether that's half damage or 2 damage)
'Looks like Togepi was successful; good. Ekans has substained a substantial amount out damage, judging by its writhing movement and increased defensiveness," Ventus thought, analyzing the ongoing battle, stoically watching everything. 'Time to finish this fig-wait, behind us!' Noticing the Trillum's Officer's Growlith growling behind, he discovered that another Ekans has slithered up behind them, and is about to strike! He desperately wanted to warn Vincent and Larry about the new arrival, but he knew by the time he did, it would already be too late.
'It appears we are in a rock and a hard place. Time to change tactics.' Raphael, busy lowering the Bold Ekan's guard, noticed a change in their master's mood, and quickly honed in on what was wrong. The Togepi's widen in surprise as they picked up on Ventus' distress: an ambush. Noticing that Raphael had their attension on them, he conveyed to it that it should try to distract the enemies present, and flush out anymore that might be hiding in the bush. Raphael instantly understood what had to be done, and unleash the loudest Growl possible!
Simultanoiusly, Ventus hand deftly dived into his satchel and pulled out a Pokeball. Taking quick aim, he lobbed it at the injured Ekans, hoping that he could capture it before it could do anymore harm.
Orders For this Round: Raphael using Growl to diminish the threat of all enemies (seen or unseen), and Ventus tossing a Pokeball at the Bold Ekans.
Effect: Lowering all Ekan's Attack, and to flush out any in hiding. Ventus hopes to capture the weakened Ekans to stop it from causing problems.
Accuracy Roll: Dex for Growl, 2 Seal Dice for the Pokeball.
Damage Roll: N/A
Add. Notes: None.
Mechanics:
Vincent and Winston will be covering Larry from attacks from an unexpected angle. Should either of them be attacked, they will evade. If not and should a target present itself, Winston will use Bite, using same math as before.
Mechanics:
Order: Bite
Accuracy: Pool 6
3 Dex + 3 Fight + 0 BrawlÂ
Damage: Pool 4 - Def, Flinch *3*
2 Str + 2
Flinch *3*
Included For Completeness:
Evade:Â 3 Dexterity + 3 Fight + 0 Evasion
You don't see a lot of this in the video game, but we're in a nest of wild animals, so I'm adding conditional orders for Vincent on the stack as well. (Trainers have HP themselves, so... that's a concern. After all 'If it bleeds, we can kill it.' applies.) If attacked, he will evade unless it places Larry in the path of the strike. Likewise, if attacked, he will defend himself using a basic strike with his cane.
And if my concerns are not warranted, well... that's roleplaying, ain't it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Good call, Doc." The unmistakable snarl of a growlithe's warning growl reminded him to keep his head in the game.
More snakes in the grass... How... fitting...
"Winston. Circle, Defend, Evade, Strike. A simple set of orders, drilled in by years of practice walking the beat. Set up a patrol perimeter, protect the civvy, avoid attacks and make use of any openings presented.
Winston reacts with practiced grace, slipping neatly into a patrol cordon around Larry with Vincent as the pair circle slowly, each covering the others' back as they interpose themselves between themselves and the looming danger they can't see. Vincent for his part, steps into the circle behind his growlithe in near perfect synchronicity, methodically sweeping his cane back and forth with a slow, polished gait as he scans the area for incoming danger, brandishing the the tip ahead of him in a guard stance.
"Watch yourself, kid. We're not out of the woods yet." He hisses, before raising his voice. "Can't see nuts from here, Doc. Call 'em as you see 'em."
Slow and clumsy, Arcaeus-damnit. He feels the muscles in his arm tense like a coiled spring and suddenly wished he still had his old nightstick with him.
Or a service revolver. That would work too.
When Nathan sees the Tangela successfully trip Ralts and Cottonee's Fairy Wind do no damage, he gets much more nervous much more quickly.  Ralts was reeling from that attack, just barely managing to consume that Oran Berry, and he didn't have a whole lot of resources right now to try and make up for that heavy blow.  He tries not to panic though since Ralts can sense exactly what he's feeling.  As this is all going through Nathan's head, he hears Shiva give Cottonee the order to evade first, attack second.  And it's at that point that Nathan gets an idea that might help them get through this...
Ralts knows what to do even before Nathan calls it out, sensing his master's worry and resolve both.
"Ralts, evade any attacks that come your way and try to stay behind Cottonee! Â If nothing attacks you, use Growl again from behind Cottonee!"
'Cottonee might be small, but it at least resists the STAB moves those two pokemon have. Â I hope Cottonee and Shiva will cooperate with me on this. Â If they don't...' Nathan didn't even want to think about what might happen if Ralts got hit again. Â The last thing he needed to do was panic Ralts, and he didn't want to lose his cool in front of anyone either. Â Keeping it together was getting hard though...
Order: Evade and take cover behind Cottonee, use Growl instead of evading if you don't get attacked
- Evade: 3 Dexterity + 0 Fight + 0 Evasion
- Cover: May reduce damage from ranged attacks (potentially to 0) by having something else absorb the brunt of the blow.  Effectiveness is determined by the size of the object or ally providing cover and the GM's discretion.  Cottonee has an average of 0.3m/1'00" size in the pokedex description.  A Ralts's average size is 0.4m/1'04", though it could also potentially crouch to make itself a smaller target due to its humanoid shape.
- Growl: 3 dex + 0 fight + 0 canalize/contest (as per the GM's judgement.)
Current Pain Penalization: -2 (half HP)
Round 2 Nurse Joy
Forgot Static chance on Tangela.
(6)(3)(2) - that's a success. Tangela is paralyzed.
Pikachu
Pikachu's move: Thundershock on Cottonee
Accuracy: 2dex +2 fight + 1 canalize
Effect: 2str +2 power -2 defense -1growl = 1 dice, chance to paralyze 1
Ralts
Order: Evade and take cover behind Cottonee, use Growl instead of evading if you don't get attacked
- Evade: 3 Dexterity + 0 Fight + 0 Evasion
- Cover: May reduce damage from ranged attacks (potentially to 0) by having something else absorb the brunt of the blow. Â Effectiveness is determined by the size of the object or ally providing cover and the GM's discretion. Â Cottonee has an average of 0.3m/1'00" size in the pokedex description. Â A Ralts's average size is 0.4m/1'04", though it could also potentially crouch to make itself a smaller target due to its humanoid shape.
- Growl: 3 dex + 0 fight + 0 canalize/contest (as per the GM's judgement.)
Current Pain Penalization: -2 (half HP)
Cottonee
Orders for this round: Evade any attacks by enemies; if they both use non-damaging moves, use Fairy Wind against Pikachu again.
Effect: Hopefully taking no damage; inflicting damage if using Fairy Wind.Â
Secondary Effect: None
Accuracy Roll: 2 Dexterity + 0 Fight = 2
Damage Roll: 1 Strength + 2 Power +1 because of STAB -1 because of Pika's Growl = 3 (- 1defense, which is my job to do I suppose!)
Additional notes: None
Tangela
Tangela's move: Flash on Cottonee
Accuracy: 2-2dex + 2 fight + 1 canalize - 1acc = 2 dice
Effect: -1 acc dice
"Pikachu, Thundershock! But I want you to create a static charge, not hurt poor fluffy Cottonee! Tangela, you know the plan."
(3)(2)(6)(4)(5) - 3 successes, hit.
Cottonee's fleece FLOOMPHS up to maximum size, and the Pokemon drifts slowly toward the Plexiglass.
(2) for damage
(1) for paralysis
No damage or paralysis.
It looks like Tangela is winding up for an attack, shaking its vines violently, so Ralts takes cover behind Cottonee.
Found some rules about cover on page 49 - it is intended for ranged attacks (which applies) and I think the cover is supposed to be stationary. So I will give you 1/4 cover instead of full body coverage, especially since Cottonee would not only be moving in battle formations, but is drifting with static.
Ralts' Evasion: (1) - 0 successes, sorry.
Cottonee, without waiting for an assenting command from Shiva, floats with all of its might to help Ralts the way Nathan suggested while still evading as its trainer commanded.Â
Evasion: 2 Dex + 0 Fight + 0 Evasion
(5)(2) - 1 success, which is not enough to reduce Pikachu's accuracy to 0 (see page 49).
Tangela's vines stream out full length in all directions, quivering. A blinding cloud of powder emerges from the Pokemon's center: by the time the dust has settled, Tangela is obscured by vines again.
Flash:
(4)(3) 1 success. Cottonee's accuracy is reduced by 1
"That was the move Flash! A rare move taught by Hidden Machine. Several breeding lines in the Trillium Town area have this move as part of their gene pool."
Summary: Cottonee's accuracy is reduced by 1 and it has an electrostatic attraction to the wall. All other actions failed.
Round 3 Nurse Joy begins!
Nathan can only stare as Cottonee squints, doing everything it can to help Ralts avoid taking more hits than necessary despite its awkward static cling. Â That was not at all what he expected to happen...Nurse Joy clearly knew what she was doing, and two newbie trainers weren't likely to beat her without struggling a great deal...Â
With Cottonee floating around wildly, it looks like that cover isn't going to be that effective, and Ralts is in the middle of the field with nothing effective to defend himself with. Nathan tenses up, getting ready to rush in if Ralts faints.  It's a tension that isn't likely to subside until the battle is over.  Despite not wanting to put Ralts in more danger, he knows he can't just concede this battle.  Whether they fail or succeed, it will be on their own skills and failings as trainers, and there wouldn't be any growth from giving up now.
Though Ralts is clearly in pain, he understands that emotion immediately.  Understanding or not though, the only thing Ralts can do that might be of any help right now would be to continue using Growl and hope it works.  Unless...no, that would be too convenient.  Ralts suddenly using Confusion after learning it mid battle would be too much to hope for... Â
'If Ralts knew Confusion, this would be way easier...then again, so would having more than one pokemon...gah, being a trainer is NOT easy, and we've barely even begun...I sure hope the others are doing okay against those Ekans...'
Ralts senses the resolve and worry coming from Nathan getting even stronger in almost equal measure.  Not wanting to disappoint Nathan in their first battle, Ralts decides on his own to put everything he can into this next Growl.
Nathan
Action: Tense up in preparation to run into the middle of the battlefield.  If Ralts faints, run into the middle of the battlefield to catch and cover him (and likely end the battle too).  Lasts until it resolves, the battle is over, or Cottonee and Ralts get an advantage over their opponents.
Ralts
Action: Growl with all his might to lower the damage taken further (spend one Will Point to add 1 success to the accuracy of Growl.  Will fail if the dice pool is 0 or Ralts is KOed before acting)
Accuracy: 3 dex + 0 fight + 0 canalize/contest
Effect: Lower all opponents' strength by 1.
Pain Penalization: -2 (half health)Â
