Tandal adds, "You would get to meet lots of Pokemon if you came to a Kennels or Daycare."
Empathy: (5)(4)(2)
Will: (4)(3)(5)(5)(4)(3)(4)
Magnemite buzzes and fires off more energy. Its aggression is clear.
Ligno: (6) + 4 Survival + 4 Dex = 14
Kirlia: (5)
Pansear: (1) + 7 = 8
Ditto: (2) + 2 Dex + 0 Survival (it was just born!) = 4
(Kirlia also gets a Trace activation!)
"Alright, so be it then. Kirlia, lock 'em down with Hypnosis. Tandal, fire away with Pansear at that Ditto!"
Hypnosis! (Ligno is the target of the first one, Ditto is the target of the second)
Accuracy: 4 Dex + 3 Fight + 3 Canalize - 4 Accuracy - 2/3 Actions = 4/3 D6
Effect: Sleepy time!
(1) Kirlia traces Sturdy. Nice one.
Ligno Round 1
Ligno's creepy flowing pink eyes open wide, their wooden shutters moving aside.
Glare 1
4 Dex + 2 Fight + 3 Intimidate -1 acc -3 moves = 5d6
(5)(2)(1)(6)(6)
Kirlia is paralyzed.
Hypnosis 1
(2)(1) It misses!
Incinerate 1 on Ditto
7 dice -2 actions = 5d6
(5)(2)(1)(2)(1) It misses, as the Ligno moves its rubbery leaves to protect its team.
Magnet Bomb 1
2 Dex + 1 Fight + 0
(2)(1)(1) The missile, though fired without finesse, zooms unerringly toward Kirlia.
2 Str + 2 power + 1 stab - 3vit = 2d6+1
(3)(6) Kirlia takes 2 dmg 5/7hp -1 pain
Ligno quivers. You aren't quite sure what he's doing. Your best guess is that it's charging an attack, since its leaves are twirling.
Hypnosis 2 on Ditto this time.
(3) Another miss for Kirlia's newest move.
Actually 0 dice, with pain and paralysis.
Incinerate 2
(2)(2)(5)(4)
2 Str +1 power + 1 stab -2 vit = 2d6
(2)(2)
The little monkey is getting upset at how fireproof these rubbery foes are.
"Do not take it so personally, Pansear. This is Nathan's battle, not ours."
Ligno does something else! It's still charging or still waiting.
So...not much has happened! During this battle, Ligno doesn't move much until the moment it makes an attack. It can then move its roots with some speed, wriggling them like a spider's legs, but despite all that movement it only progresses a few yards in a round. In terms of movement speed, a human is about 3x as fast as this Ligno in combat.
Ligno Round 2
"Nathan, I could try Pansear's Yawn instead, if you wish."

"Please. I want that Ligno shut down if possible, before it causes unnecessary trouble, and that Ditto asleep to make capturing it easier. Good try, Kirlia, but I guess we're gonna have to try a different approach.Â
Have an Oran Berry and a Paralyze Heal. Evade if a Magnet Bomb is incoming, and pelt that Ditto with Confusions."
Confusion
Accuracy: 10 D6 base -3/4/5 Actions = 7/6/5 D6

Effect: Confusion (1)
Evade (if Kirlia would be hit with Magnet Bomb, replaces a Confusion action)

Glare 1
(3)(2)(3)(6)(1)
Pansear is paralyzed!
Confusion 1
(6)(6)(2)(5)(1)(2)(4)
(6)(5)(2)(5)(6) Magnemite/Ditto takes 3 dmg 2/5hp -2 pain
Yawn 1 on Ligno
(4)(3)(1)(5)(4)
Hm...Ligno doesn't seem to be getting drowsy.
Magnet Bomb 1
(4)
Evasion: (1)(1)(1)(4)(3)
(3)(6) Kirlia takes 2 dmg 4/7hp -1 pain
Bad luck. Kirlia stumbles over a marshy pothole, and the seeking missile hits him anyway.
Wood Hammer 2 on Pansear
4 Dex + 2 Fight + 2 Brawl -3 actions -1* = 4d6
(5)(1)(6)(5)
4 Str + 5 power -2 vit = 7d6 -1
(5)(2)(1)(4)(1)(6)(1) Pansear takes 1 dmg, being very lucky. 4/5hp.
Recoil hits Ligno!
18/20hp -1 pain
Ligno's massive branches and leaves club down on Pansear. Mostly the leaves, luckily.
Yawn 2on Ditto
(6)(5)(4)(3) That seems to work! Magnemite/Ditto is getting drowsy.
Ligno seems aware of what's happening with this Ditto, and concentrates (too late!) on the statusing Pokemon. It flails desperately at Pansear.
Wood Hammer 3
(3)(6)(3)
(2)(5)(3)(4)(3)(1)(4) Pansear takes 2 dmg 2/5hp -2 pain
"Retreat, Pansear. Come sit on my shoulder. Nathan, do you want Gloom's help? He'll resist electricity, at least."
Confusion 3
(2)(1)(4)(5)
(5)(2)(1)(5)(4) Ditto faints! Returning to his own native form.
Ligno Round 3
"Status conditions can be inflicted and stacked BEFORE the pokemon faints, a Fainted Pokémon will keep all of the previously inflicted conditions." You can consider him asleep.

That's weird...hmmm...well, Nathan wasn't going to mess around with this Ligno on the loose since it doesn't seem to want to take a nap. Â Time to chuck a Great Ball and get the heck outta dodge!
"Yeah, send in Gloom to delay the Ligno, please. Â Once I've caught Ditto, we can get outta here. Â Kirlia, back to me, please! You did great! Â
Zippy, help Gloom delay that Ligno! Â Evade any and all attacks coming your way!"
Evade
Accuracy: 10 base -3/4/5 actions = 7/6/5
Great Ball's Seal Strength 4 versus Ditto's 1 Will remaining. Â Let's get this over with quickly!

Water Pulse 1
3 actions this time
(4)(4)(4)(5)(2)(2)(4) Critical hit.
(4)(5)(2)(4)(3)(3) Poochyena takes 3 dmg 1/6hp.
The little dog is sent tumbling head over heels. He shakes his fur, which is drenched in water, and spits up some water as well.
Seaking declares victory and begins to Swift Swim away.
Well, that one single time Shiva didn't pay full attention to this battle immediately came back to bite her harsh, as there was no chance she could have avoided her young hyena being hit by that Water Pulse. She could only watch with a raised eyebrown as that Seaking gave her and her drenched Pokemon a huff, showed of its precious fins and color and jumps right back into the fishing spot. Well, she could easily break her promise now and chase it down with Magical Leaves, but she opted against that as her Pokemon was in more need for her care now than the idea of seeking revenge and pretty sure go icy while doing so. Let's better have Seaking leave in peace.
Instead, she approached her special Poochyena - the sight of him being so drenched and humilated caused her heart to BLEED - while already rummaging in bagsack in seek for something she was pretty sure she still had with her... Found! Kneeing down in front of Yena, she carefully caught his attention by looking at him until he returned her gaze. When he did, he earned a VERY APPRECIATING pat on his forehead - something he might have never expected. If he understood orders correctly, Master wanted him to bite that fish until defeat, so what was she doing now?!
No reply came from Shiva though, she even began to smile faintly at her Pokemon from a little higher than eyelevel.
A few moments later, Yena found himself being covered from the ears downward by that gift towel Shiva received at the treehouse spa resort in Fireweed Forest, as well as being offered to sniff on a bottle of a Potion. When he did so, finally Master was speaking up in a soft voice to him. There was nothing audible that pointed to failure or distress over this battle. "Nevermind defeat, Yena. I don't doubt you didn't give your best, and you are more trained to bite and ward off Ghost Types than Water Types. One day, you may even volve into a full grown hyena and teach your foes respect by baring your teeth. Sseeing what we've learned from this battle is way better idea than going sour and angry over it. You are allowed to be as angry as you like though, and I can find you an opponent later to bite down with pleasure if you'd prefer that. For now, let me take care of you first, alright? Yes, this thing contains medicine that'll ease your pain. That towel will drain most moisture out of your fur if you let me stroke it through your fur - I used this towel a few times actually, but only to dry my own hair after washing it (means, it does carry the scent of his Master for a Poochyena). I can brush out any remains of moisture of you if you let me use this brush on you - yes, here, you can sniff on it too."
----------------
Mechanics:
I assume I could still pester Seaking with a no-fail-SE-Grass-STAB, but let's care for defeated Yena instead and turn this into some bonding time. He has equal Loyalty and Disobediance, does he let Shiva keep him on her lap, use a Potion on him to put him back to 5/6hp, dry him with the towel smelling after her, and finally brush his fur in gentle stroking movements? I'm also serious to have Yena battle away any of his personal humilation(?) and restore pride by seeking a battle against an NPC's (or wild one, if available) Psychic or Ghost Type for him later if he gives Shiva signs that he'd enjoy that.
Ligno Round 3
Great ball: (3)(2)(1)(4)
Will: (4)
Ditto slowly oozes out of the ball, leaving it unharmed.
Gloom's initiative: (4)
Ligno immediately glares at the new arrivals
Glare 1 on Zippy
(6)(1)(5)(4) 3 successes vs (3)(3)(1)(6)(4)(4)(5)
Zippy shows off by flying in backwards, eyes facing away from Ligno's baleful glare.
Lucky Chant from Gloom
(2)(2)(4)(5)
Glare 2 on Gloom
(6)(6)(4) vs (1)(4)(6) Gloom is paralyzed
Glare 3
(1)(2)
Ligno Round 4
Great Ball: (5)(5)(1)(3) vs (6)
Ditto was caught!
Attitude: 0/0/0
Ability: Limber
Moves: Transform
Ditto can transform into any Pokemon he's seen, using a straight up Insight roll needing only one success.
Has all moves of that Pokemon under 15XP, +5 XP for every gym badge the trainer has.
If he's face to face with the Pokemon in question, no roll is needed, and he has the same moves as his foe.
Most Surprises will be copied.
Ditto has 3 Transformations per day (Will points).
More info available under the move Transform.
Ditto can transform into objects, too, but his powers are more limited. Again, an Insight roll is required, and he must have seen a physical copy of the object in question. Complicated machinery is beyond his grasp, at least for now. He also has reasonable size limitations, maybe a 1 yard cube or so.
"Shall we flee? Perhaps I can simply tell the village about Ligno's last location in exchange for some supplies."
Both Combee gain +1 Loyalty.
Poochyena enjoys the toweling, as long as his wings stay clear. Then he chews on it.
You take this as a sign that he approves of all your choices for him, including going after a ghost soon!
A moot point, but just so you know: When trying to hit a fleeing Pokemon underwater without pursuing it, projectile attacks are the best. Magical Leaf sure counts, as would Poison Sting or Ice Shard. Another good one is ranged attacks that aren't real: Confusion and Dark Pulse come to mind. Moves that disturb large quantities of water could work, like Water Pulse. But not Water Gun, or Ember, unless you have enough firepower to heat all of the water.
How sweet and peaceful it was to just stay there and bond with her Pokemon - of course she took care of his wings, as tiny as they where! - it certainly restored some of Shiva's spirits back to a point where she feels more in tone with herself. She also let Yena chew on that towel as much ash he wanted and eventually turned this into a playing session where he pulls on that towel and Shiva pulls in the opposite direction. Sometimes she 'won', sometimes Yena, but was obvious that Yena had a way more firm grip on the towel than his Master did.
He earned more strokes and pats before being told "We'll find you some Ghost Types to chew on soon enough then. For now, rest a little inside your Pokeball, alright?"
Next and probably last step before continuing the path to the village was resturning the fishing rod to Ventus. As soon as she found him, he got it offered back in a faint yet honest smile. "Here. Thank you for lending it to me... I had decent luck with it I guess, but nothing worth catching. You, em, doing well? You look a bit pale..." No, Shiva won't ask why or what has happened. All she wanted to know how was he was doing, and she'd notice if he'd lie.
(I feel like Psyshock could also work. Besides, while I'm editing anyway, is/was that run-in with Seaking still worth some XP?)

(Okay, wow. That means Zippy is the first pokemon in the campaign with both 5 Happiness and 5 Loyalty. Hmmm...was expecting that to be Kirlia, tbh, but eh. Probably not long before he gets there too, right? And yay, Princess is at 3 loyalty now! Only one more to go before I don't have to worry about her disobedience too much in the midst of battle...oh, and how much exp did everyone get for that capture?)
"Yeah, let's get out of here. That Ligno doesn't look super pleased."
Nathan books it with Swiftfire, the combee, and Kirlia immediately after retrieving the Great Ball containing Ditto. That Ligno's roots might be fast, but its movement speed certainly isn't high! Nathan chooses not to look behind him though, just in case...he can't afford to trip on something because he's not paying attention to where he's going, after all!
Nathan's panting a bit by the time he and Tandal reach the pointy rock everyone was going to meet at...
"...phew...did we...lose it?"
