"That Flash was a nice one, but coming so unexpected, it was also a pain for the eyes. Ough... " Let's hope Joy's Pikachu doesn't come up with Volttacke as a second nasty suprise...
Not good. Definitely not good. With the walls looking like they're inflicted with Electric Terrain and a hurted ally that causes Paralysis if she tries to help it, this whole thing wasn't that simple anymore as in the round before... Battling looked so easy from the exterior.
"Whatever you do, Cottonee, DON'T MOVE UNLESS YOU HAVE TO! Stay away from the walls! If you wish to cover Ralts a little, this is fine, but please try to avoid direct contact - Static, remember?" Remember... What did the Professor say again about an...? "Listen up! If there's indeed an item hidden in your fluffy body, hand that over to Ralts! Hope it helps a bit..."
"Also, bring up more Fairy dust! Aim for that annoying Pikachu, and please show me that you're not just a decorative little wad of cotton! Well, hopefully you're not..."
Initiative: 4 dice
Orders for this round: Hand that held Oran Berry to the ally, then use Fairy Wind with maximum force.
Effect: No more held item, inflicting damage on Pika.
Secondary Effect: Some Fairy Dust will probably remain in the air. Hopefully none will react allergic to it.
Pain Penalization: 0 so far
Accuracy Roll: 2 Dexterity + 0 Fight -1 because of Tangela's Flash = 1 dice, 1 autosuccess because of 1 Willpoint
Damage Roll: 1 Strength + 2 Power +1 because of STAB -1 because of Pika's Growl + 0 Pain = 3 dice
Additional notes: Spending a Will Point to add one sucess to Accuracy Roll. Character will be exhausted at the end of round due to this.
Larry herd Vincent give a order to his growlth Larry turns around and sees the Ekans and told Oshawott "Oshawott turn around and hit him with a tackle!" Larry grabs a pokeball and gets ready to throw the ball
Order: tackle
Accuracy: 2 Dex + 0 fight
Damage: 1 strength=1?
(Not sure if this is right)
Round 2 Ekans!
The rulebook says that Trainer actions go at the end of the round, but I feel you should be able to throw a Pokeball earlier. And in the games Pokeballs have highest priority. So for now, I'll have you throw balls when it is most advantageous to you.
On a similar note, if multiple people want to catch the same Pokemon and can't work it out among themselves, bidding with player XP will start. In today's case we're fine, because only Windos and Larry are trying to catch an Ekans this round.
Another rules note: I just realized that multiple of the same effects aren't supposed to stack (pg 50). So you can't growl the same enemy twice in this game, and I shouldn't have stacked Charm and Intimidate x2. You could use Charm (-2 dmg) to override Growl (-1 dmg), though. Starting next encounter, I'll be following that rule. Honestly, this will make it easier to run an encounter as GM!
Stealthy Ekans
Multiple actions: Poison Sting Togepi, Wrap Winston (takes place at end of round)
Poison Sting 1
Accuracy: 2dex + 1 fight +1 canalize -2 Multiple actions = 2 dice
Dmg: 1 power, 2 strength - this Ekans has not yet been debuffed = 3 dice
Oshawatt
Tackle
accuracy: 2dex + 0 fight + 0 brawl -2 paralyze = 0 dice, just a luck dice
damage: 1str +2 power = 3 dice
Togepi
Growl
Accuracy: 1 dice.
Winston
Order:Â Bite
Accuracy:Â Pool 6
3 Dex + 3 Fight + 0 BrawlÂ
Damage:Â Pool 4 - Def, Flinch *3*
2 Str + 2
Flinch *3*
Stealthy Ekans
Another huge snake has appeared to torment you. It rattles, then fires a barrage of poison needles from its tail, striking Togepi. Without a pause, it continues toward Winston, flexing its long, smooth muscles.
Accuracy: (1)(6) - 1 success, hit
Damage: (6)(6)(3)(4) - 3Â successes, +1Â . Togepi takes 4Â damage!
Poison: (5) - not a success
Togepi
(3) - no successes, that's a miss.
Togepi growls weakly, but it seems Bold Ekans is feeling too defeated to get any MORE scared of this party, and Stealthy Ekans is feeling too confident.
Oshawott
Accuracy: (6) - success (Luck dice require a 6 to succeed, or else something negative happens!), hit
Dmg: (3)(2)(5) - 1 success. Stealthy Ekans takes 1 damage.
Oshawott runs toward Ekans, then freezes in place. Runs, then freezes. In a great all-or-nothing charge, he tackles Stealthy Ekans.
Growlithe Winston
Accuracy: (6)(5)(6)(1)(6)(6) - 5 successes, ANOTHER crit!
Flinch (6)(1)(1)
Dmg: (3)(2)(4) + (4)(4) - 3 successes, Ekans takes 3 damage
Winston leaps over the Ekans, landing the perfect position for a bite. His practice on the previous snake pays off - he knows just where to chew to do the most damage.
Trillium Growlithe
Accuracy: (3)(2)(6)(4) - 2 successes, hit.
Dmg: (5)(1)(6)(6) - 3 successes. Ekans takes 3 more damage and faints![/b]
"Growlithe, how about you use Bite, too!" shouts the officer. Growlithe marches forward a few steps, the way police Pokemon are trained to do, then suddenly gave in to the joy of play. Growlithe grabs the other end of the Snake Pokemon and begins a tug of war with Winston! Bowing in the play pose, he pulls on the Ekans until its eyes are bulging. Ekans tries to wrap one of its captors, but it goes unconscious before it can manage.
Pokeballs
Ventus
(4)(5) - 2 successes
Ekans: 5Â Will, pain -2
(5)(2)(3) - 1 success. Ekans was caught by Ventus!
Larry
(6)(4) - 2 successes
Ekans: 5 Will, -5 Unconscious
Ekans was caught by Larry!
Stealthy Ekans (again)
Too late, he's unconssssscious.
These Ekans are quite good, for they are sort of mini-boss Pokemon. Congrats on the catches...but they are not pleased with you!
Ventus, your Ekans knows Glare and Poison Sting. Its happiness is 1, its Loyalty is 0, and its Disobedience is 1.
Larry, your Ekans knows Poison Sting and Wrap. Its happiness is 0, its Loyalty is 0, and its Disobedience is 1.
Both have 6 HP plus your trainer Vitality.
Winston and Growlithe scour the immediate area for more Ekans, but they find only an empty rock shelf smelling of snakes and worn smooth by the passage of many bellies. Within is a torn pant leg with cargo pocket - containing $54. Looks to be an adult's size.
Please read the notes from the Purple encounter about upcoming rule changes.
Round 3 Nurse Joy
Pikachu
Pikachu's move: Quick Attack on Cottonee
Accuracy: 2dex +2 fight + 0 brawl
Effect: 2str +2 power -2 defense -1growl = 1 dice dmg, priority, double speed
Ralts
Action: Growl with all his might to lower the damage taken further (spend one Will Point to add 1 success to the accuracy of Growl.  Will fail if the dice pool is 0 or Ralts is KOed before acting)
Accuracy:Â 3 dex + 0 fight + 0 canalize/contest
Effect:Â Lower all opponents' strength by 1.
Pain Penalization:Â -2 (half health)Â
Cottonee
Orders for this round:Â Hand that held Oran Berry to the ally, then use Fairy Wind with maximum force.
Effect:Â No more held item, inflicting damage on Pika.
Secondary Effect:Â Some Fairy Dust will probably remain in the air. Hopefully none will react allergic to it.
Pain Penalization:Â 0 so farÂ
Accuracy Roll:Â 2 Dexterity + 0 Fight -1 because of Pika's Flash = 1 dice, 1 autosuccess because of 1 Willpoint
Damage Roll:Â 1 Strength + 2 Power +1 because of STAB -1 because of Pika's Growl + 0 Pain = 3 dice
Additional notes:Â Spending a Will Point to add one sucess to Accuracy Roll. Character will be exhausted at the end of round due to this.
Tangela
Tangela's move: vine whip on Cottonee
Accuracy: 2dex + 2 fight + 0 brawl
damage 2str +2 + 1STAB = 5 dice, -2 for Defense = 3Â dice
"Pikachu, our friend Shiva won't learn much unless she experiences what it's like to have your partner take a hit. Use Quick Attack! Tangela, Vine Whip! Both on Cottonee!"
Pikachu blurs. Why, it's greased lightning! Suddenly, Cottonee is off-kilter and spinning slowly in the air!
Accuracy: (5)(3)(1)(3) - 1 success, hit.
Dmg: (5) - 1 success. Cottonee takes 1 damage.
When the dust settles, Cottonee's fluffy body has absorbed most of the blow. Ralts looks concerned, then pleased. Its tiny grin widens as a berry comes flying out of Cottonee to land in Ralts' arms. Ralts consumes the Oran Berry to regain 1hp. Ralts growls in pleasure.
Accuracy: (5)(2)(1) + will point: 2 successes
Pikachu and Tangela have 1 less dmg dice, for a total of -2
Cottonee stops spinning, pointing directly at Pikachu. Its tiny eyes narrow. A blast of fairy dust comes flying out.
Accuracy: (4), + Will point, that's 2 successes and a hit.
Pikachu darts rapidly out of the blast of windblown dust, but is still caught in the cone. His paws clutch at the floor as he is borne into the air by the fairy dust, then dropped abruptly.
Dmg: (4)(1)(6), 2 success, Pikachu takes 2 damage. 2HP remain.
Tangela rocks back and forth as though laughing. Much entertained, it sets Cottonee spinning again with a Vine Whip.
Accuracy: (3)(2)(3)(3) - fail
"Tangela! Stop being cruel at once!"
Tangela immediately and gently halts Cottonee's spin and sets the Pokemon down, then pats Cottonee on the head gently.
"Tangela prefers causing chaos to actually winning battles, I think," says Nurse Joy.
Summary: Cottonee takes 1 damage, Tangelchu are at -2 Str, Ralts regained 1hp, Pikachu took 2 dmg.
I guess if everyone misses and Growls all the time, battles take longer!
Round 4Â Nurse Joy begins

Defeat
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Winston. Come. Gotta do some cleanup. Open." He fishes through his backpack for his water bottle and a swab as the growlithe pads over with an inquisitive look. Lowering himself to one knee, he deftly swabs out the inside of Winston's mouth.
"Can't get you falling sick over residual snake venom can we?"
From the awkward position, Winston manages an muted whine.
"Stop complaining, you lug." Satisfied that he's cleared out the worst of it, he stuffs the expended swab into a ziplock bag, and slowly helps himself back to his feet with his cane.
The battle to hold an even tone is real as the flush of anger returns, crackling back into existence like a bonfire igniting.
"You. Kid. Self preservation's not a big thing with you huh? Notice snakes don't wear trousers? Good? Good." He gestures angrily at the torn pants leg in the nest.
"Where do you think they got that? A PERSON! That's who."
He bites back further vitriol before it can emerge.
"You just got yourself jumped by a pair of Ekans by walking straight into their Arcaeus-damned nest. Alone. Without backup. Think about what would have happened if the Officer and the Doc hadn't shown up. Think."
Ball that anger. Let it go. It is his better part talking now. He exhales slowly.
Letting his shoulders slump, he glances back at Zentus and the officer.
"Good call, Doc. Looks like we got here just in time."
Turning to the officer he offers a firm handshake.
"Never caught your name, officer. Name's Vincent Lee. Thanks for your help."
"Vincent...Vincent...That name sounds almost familiar, somehow...No, nevermind, I don't think I've ever met you. Must be the adrenaline.
The name's Corporal Wake. Robin Wake, to friends. You folks better get to the Pokemon Center and get checked over, make sure there's no poison in you. Thanks for clearing out that snake nest - we've actually ousted them before, but our Nurse Joy made us use live traps. Set 'em loose in the desert; apparently they came crawling back to Trillium Town!"
He mutters about Long Grass angrily.
For the three of you in the Ekans battle, each of your Pokemon earns 3XP.
Each of you as trainers earns half that rounded down, so 1XP. For your heroism in saving your companion, and for courage if you're Larry, you are awarded 2 XP. Well, possibly courage, possibly negligent recklessness. 3 Trainer XP total.
The rain slows down to a trickle as you lick your wounds and recover your breath. The forbidding mountain can be seen clearly. Thick black mud washes down the craggy peaks. When it reaches the town, it flows into vast ditches dug for that very purpose and is flushed away or repurposed into a cheap clay. Wrought iron fences keep children out of the muddy ditches, though they love to play in it.
"Pleasure meeting you, Corporal Wake. You ever work a case with an Officer Jenny?
The joke is an old and tired one and most cops would have heard it in some form or other. The traditional response, though it varied by the precinct, was a variation of 'Which one?'.
The implications were obvious; only policemen told that joke.
Walking over to the nest, he fishes out the trouser leg. "Gonna take that Centre trip under advisement, Wake. I'll buy a coffee next time we're in town. We should be off."
Which reminds me.
"Doc. Might want to have some trainer backup around when you crack the seal on that ball. Snakes eat eggs, and that brutish fellow you just picked up is used to doing whatever the heck it wants. Given we just beat it within an inch of it's life, it's not likely to be in a good mood when it gets out. Same goes for you kid."
He adjusts his pack again, feeling the heavy weight of the egg and it's incubation capsule and waves Winston over, the dog reluctantly ceasing his sniffing around to fall in beside him.
"If everyone's done here, we should check in at the Pokemon Centre like the good man says."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mechanics:
An easy 3 way split the cash nets everyone in the fight $18.
"Oh, you've worked with Officer Jenny? Maybe that's where I heard of you, if we're thinking of the same gal!"

Turning to the officer he offers a firm handshake. "Never caught your name, officer. Name's Vincent Lee. Thanks for your help."
Walking towards his Togepi, he scooped them up in his arms and petted its head. Crying weakly, Raphael stared at Ventus with a strain on its faces. Ventus wanly smiled, proud and impressed with what his Togepi accomplished. "You've done well, Raphael. You helped save a person's life today, even against long odds. Here," Ventus gave Raphael the Oran Berry he was saving for a treat. He watched his Togepi eat the berry with gusto, looking slightly less likely to kneel over after it was done. Yawning quietly, Raphael closed his eye and snuggled into Ventus' arm, feeling it was in the safest place in the world.
With a tired chuckle, Ventus brought out Togepi's pokeball and returned it. "Rest well, my angel. May you dream of clear open skies," Ventus said, beforestowing it away somewhere on his person. Turning towards the group, he saw Vincent chew Larry out for his rather blatantly stupid action. Approaching the group, he confronted Larry, and slapped him across the face. Hard. Hand stinging still, he croached down and gripped the young Trainer's shoulders, starring him dead in the eyes. "You damn fool. I consider myself an understanding person, but what you done today defies even my comprehension. As Vincent has said, THIS," Ventus waved his hand towards the grim article of cloathing, "is what happens to those that do not think before they do."
"I'll say what he didn't, however: You could have died. You, and your partner Oshawatt. Most likely would, if we are being realistic. Whether from poison or strangulation, both of you would have died." Shaking his head at the thought, he looked sadly at the boy. He hates what he saying to him, and he dispises what he's going to say next, but he has to. The kid has to learn the harsh truth of his action, if he has any hope of surviving in this world. "Your death would not be the end of your foolishness, though. How would your mother and father react, hearing that their young boy died. Or went missing, if the authorities never found a body. How would we feel, me and Vincent, if we didn't go off chasing you, and found out that you died? When you die, its not just you that get hurt. Your friends, family, peers, and the entire community would morn you, another soul lost to the wilds."
Ventus let Larry go and drew himself to his full height, looking down upon the young trainer."Do you understand? Know the consequence of your actions. If you can't or won't, perhaps being a Pokémon Trainer isn't what you are cut out for." Ventus finished speaking with Larry, and with a sigh, turned to face Vincent. Weakly smiling at him, he told him that he was going back to the Pokémon Center to heal everyone in his party up, and get some shut eye. "This day has been exhausting experience for the both of us, I can image. Let's head back into and get some rest, alright Vince?"
