(Actually, this roleplay takes place after the events of the game, at least by the lore put forward by Lord Windos. I think that fits pretty well, leaves a bit more freedom.)

welp the main character had just gotten past the first two gyms and was at nuclear plant epsilon when a group of wild pokemon ravaged him and knocked him unconscious. The Nuclear abomination that they unleashed badly injured him and left him to be corrupted by the nuclear radiation slowly infecting him. Theo's father was unable to save him and he now has no mind. (his pokemon got corrupted also due to radiation seeping out of him)
