Can't Access Wonder Trade - EeveeBailey - 10-20-2016

I honestly don't know if this is related to the 1.0.4 update, or if this is some random change to the wifi hotspot I'm using, but every time I try to get into Wonder Trade, I have this window pop up:

Followed by this error message in-game:

Clearly, I do have Internet access, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to update the game.  I tried re-installing and re-patching, but it's still doing this.  I've never had issues at this hotspot before (but I do have issues with some other sites and games, so I guess they could have changed something since the last time I was here).  Any suggestions? Undecided

the ping windows is fine, it pops up regardless now, part of the security, I'm guessing, it isn't relevant to the message that followed

I just tried getting into the GTS, and it's the same problem. Now, it could be because I'm at work, so our network may be blocking access to that, but somehow I doubt it. I'll have to try it when I get home.

My concern is that the IP address that it's pinging (8.8.8.8) is almost certainly not a valid address for a server. So, I'm wondering if that's the problem.

Straight 8's is Google's public DNS IP, I believe.

Yes, it is.  "L" on the Breeders Discord (YES @MonkeyLord83, you heard me right, I finally ventured onto the Discord!! Tongue ) told me that was Google's IP.  I tested the ping myself and posted the screenshot there at L's suggestion, and both L and another member told me that my hotspot's router must have been blocking "echo requests".  No idea what that means, though. Confused

I do know the particular hotspot I used yesterday does have a tendency to keep some online games from working properly.  Many of the games on the gaming site Pogo don't connect to the servers properly, as well as the online features of Insurgence.  However, I've never had an issue connecting to Uranium's servers from there until yesterday, so I have no idea if the router settings changed since the last time I used that hotspot, or if something changed in the update as far as how the game connects to the servers.  I didn't have any issues updating the game or checking for Mystery Gifts while I was there, though.

It doesn't have to do with security. It is a temporary fix for a stability problem with the game's online handler. It was meant to check if you had an internet connection before trying to go online. That window wasn't actually supposed to be visible. Hopefully I should be able to remove it in the next update.

You know, I wonder if that's the change that "broke" my ability to get on Uranium's servers on that hotspot.  On a lark, I've tried that ping trick that L told me to do on all the hotspots I've used recently, and the ones that get the same "timed-out" error message are also ones that I've learned don't do certain things (like access other gaming servers).

So apparently, for some reason these hotspots are blocking these pings to check for Internet connection.  I still don't understand why, unless that's just an easy way to block computers from accessing gaming servers for... I don't know, bandwidth concerns? Huh

Which leads me to ask... @ReeNormies, had it not been checking for a connection that way before?  And since you said it was a "temporary fix", is there some chance that it'll not be doing that in the future?  (Not asking to reverse it just for me, of course. Blush  But if this is a method that's going to be around for the foreseeable future, then I'll just know to stick with the hotspots that I know work for me and avoid the others if I want to do some trading.)

Well the problem before was that it wouldn't check the connection it would just connect, which would be fine normally but RPGMaker can't properly handle connection errors, so if it couldn't connect with the server the game would freeze and go not responding for a while. I tried to fix it by having it do this before doing the actual connection but that was a really improvised fix which I do intend to remove. I have the team working on a better way to handle internet connections and I think they are almost done.
