Seddi is going to have exactly 1 encounter free today if nothing else comes up (it'd be nice for things to slow down a little given how quickly it went into high gear).Either way is fine for Darren RE: [Meta Thread] Lord Windos' PokeRole Adventure 2: The Wild Lands - Spiritmon - 06-10-2024 (06-10-2024, 04:43 PM)Dragonstrike Wrote:(06-10-2024, 04:29 PM)Spiritmon Wrote: Well, I was planned to Oz have a conversation time with Bernard in day 3 since it was something me and Phantom was interested in do. But with most of the shops closed that might makes things a little difficult... Yeah, but there is the Angry encounter waiting for me. Not to mentioned Ghosts and Fire Pokemon will be pretty much a nightmare to deal with. And I still under the side effects of the Kumbaya. So I kinda lost in what to do. Sada has postponed it indefinitely, due to the recent twin crisis Ed suddenly TRIPLING her workload, as she has to bust heads getting things sorted out, trying to get comps with Paldea online AND having extra meetings with diplomats over this and other topics. That, and through the grapevine she has heard of Bern’s and Vern’s conditions and didn’t want to exasperate them by making them hike over to a stuffy meeting. She’ll explain as much to Seddi when they meet for breakfast and to touch base - this is yet another reason she is rather CROSS right now in general. If asked, she can send some pre recorded videos to everyone as a expedited form of introductions, as well as including a set up ‘inbox’ to send any questions or requests - which will be addressed ASAP if they’re reasonable or interesting enough to interrupt her busy schedule. This frees up an Encounter with everyone now to do with as they please. Plans have gone awry, but at least you got some extra time out of it? Video recording sounds good if in person meetings are indefinitely postponed. Seddi can also answer some questions if need be
RE: [Meta Thread] Lord Windos' PokeRole Adventure 2: The Wild Lands - Pokekitty2 - 06-11-2024 Windos - I'd like to present: Pokekitty2's Ideas on Pokemon Speech and Cross-Species Communication! (Please edit any of this you see fit - I'd like to present this as a huge "?" and a suggestion, but working that throughout the post is difficult so I'm putting this here )--all that follows, even if stated as fact, should be taken as a question and open for discussion-- Methods of communication: There are three major parts to communication, used in different ratios by different species: Gesture - The most common. This includes subtle gestures like facial expressions, all the way up to large gestures like body language or positioning in space. Vocalization - The most used by Humans. This includes any number of sounds an individual can make - for example, a pokemon can vocalize their name, either in whole or in part, and also use a range of grunts, hisses, chirps, song, etc. depending on their species. Other (Scent, Signatures, etc.) - This includes pheromones and scent markers, psychic signatures, territory markings, and anything else a species may use to communicate. Cross-Species communication: Communication between species is difficult sometimes. Different animals have various ways of presenting their ideas, feelings, and intents, so not everything is translatable. That said, I posit there are four different levels of understanding: Understanding of Intent This level of understanding is the easiest to reach, and is for the most part universal. It covers ideas such as, "I'm curious," "I want to fight," "I'm being defensive," and "I want to be left alone." Understanding of Emotion This is the next level, and often requires some level of similarity between species to understand - for example, an Ursaring may understand a Sableye's emotions (both humanoid mammal-like species) but not a Combee's or Flababe's (insect and plant-like species). This covers simple emotions like attraction, sadness, anger, or confusion, but may not cover more complex or subtle emotions. Understanding of Meaning This is the level that most very similar species come to. This level enables complex communication, and can be achieved by similar species (Two different Eeveelutions, for example), or by highly intelligent individuals who can "translate" for another species (Telepathic pokemon, or Legendaries). Understanding of Thought This is the most complex level, only attainable by individuals who are greatly in tune with each other or have trained. This includes Pokemon under the influence of Synchronize, twins, and mind readers. This can also be situational - for example, two high-level chess players may reach this level during a game, but barely reach and understanding of meaning outside of it. These levels of understanding can be one-sided, or even faked or falsified - or just lucked into. It's all variable. All of that said, Sylvia is a telepath - she has practice translating her thoughts for other individuals, and particularly for humans, which allows her to communicate in the human world. She also has an uncanny ability to speak to other 'mons, but (so far) our mon-to-mon communication has been going through another level of translation - from the in-game speech to a form that we readers can understand. For example: When an Eeveelution greets another pokemon, there are two elements: -Verbal: the pokemon utters their name (eg. "Espeon" or "Sylveon") -Physical: The pokemon tilts their head slightly, cocks one ear, and waves their tail slightly. And it may look like this: [attachment=1393] To in-world characters, they have the same meaning. But we see them as such: "Greetings." "Hello!" (That Sylveon is a little cursed, my bad lol) ...so that's something that can be played with. One final thought I've had: Names We've discussed, kinda, that pokemon don't have names like humans do - this was seen with the Murkrow. That said, pokemon sometimes do have personally identifying call signs - They're just not exactly what we expect. Again, the 'mon-to-reader translation is messing with us here - Sylvia's call sign was [UNTRANSLATABLE], for example. But Sylvia's parteners are still referred to by her as Sir and Slash, which are simplified versions of their call signs. Depending on the species, a 'mon's call sign may or may not have meaning - Sylvia's doesn't, for example, but a Pidgey may be called born-on-the-highest-wire, or flew-first. These signs may also change throughout a 'mon's life, or depending on who is using them - an Eevee may be called littlest-one by their siblings, fifth-egg by their mother, and seventh-child by their mother, for example. Thoughts? RE: [Meta Thread] Lord Windos' PokeRole Adventure 2: The Wild Lands - Lord Windos - 06-11-2024 (06-11-2024, 08:49 AM)Pokekitty2 Wrote: Windos - I'd like to present: Damn. This is the sort of stuff that my old, old character Ventus would write and hypothetically write in-universe, and as a Pokemon Sociologist with several PHDs and a natural (if severely messed up) Human Empath that is high praise indeed! Honesty, I could see this as the abstract for a research paper published by Sylvia or another character in the campaign, and I'd be more than happy to incorporate and tweek it to better fit into the world. The only one I can think of right now is that Pokemon could indeed have 'human' or easily 'understood' names - even if they sound jibberish, likek Zycxga for example - and that body language and a certain amount of spiritua1ity/Insight is more significant for Communication in genera1 . However, that's on1y Wor1d of God speaking - In Universe the said Abstract could be presented as is and generate debate and supporters from the research community, if I or others really want to track down said geopolitica threads and come up with research together in game. For example I got ideas for 'books' about Trainers and how each Region and their culture perceives and shapes them, or the status of Pokemon Rights vs Human Rights. Most of the time I sit on this sort of stuff, though, since I don't really want to force worldbuilding down everyone's throat and I have a hard enough time keeping the game updated without said tangents or supplementary material being made. Still, if enough interest is there I do make said 'lore dumps' , and I hardly object to others coming up with their own takes on what I laid out! I'm a worldbuilder myself, so this is one of my joys I'm all for lore dumps, if you've got the time and interest ![]() In terms of Sylvia publishing, yeah, I don't mind that. She's a reader to the point where I had actually planned on her having writing as well. That said, whether she'd publish scientific papers or fiction... actually, I think she'd do both. Though if her fictional publishings are ever brought up, that'd get a real fierce blush out of her... *sly smile* This gives her an in to knowing (of) Zephy, too, which makes that interaction fun

I would have said '2nd Encounter pls' as I cannot know how long it'lk take ne to handle things with Mr.Gleam and Saph, but I see that this is mute anyway as that meeting is postponed.
