[Sprite] Custom Sprites
#21
Trying to get the angle just right for the hat on Mega Arbok's front sprite was such a bitch.

The original attempt at making the spider-web of stems and thorns on the back of Arbok didn't go over well, and I ended up having to start over from the beginning:

I'm glad I did though, because both the web and rose itself look much better in the final version.

This was my first concept for what should go on Mega Arbok's hood. Originally, I wanted to have something akin to patterns on the skull that radiated out to become the background, but I settled on this instead:

This was what I ended up settling on, but it soon became clear with observation and Discord feedback that trying to just adapt the existing sprite without shading wasn't going to cut it with all the visual clutter with the rib bones. While I like the fire effect, I think the current final sprite works better as the fire and skull don't obstruct the curving of the ribs and spine. As a note, the skull itself is another Carlos Calaca Guacamelee reference, as the skull has a red mustache and Calaca escaped Hell after dealing with the devil (hence the fire):

And this last one was just a little something I threw together today when someone foolishly asked in the Discord what a Halloween S51 might look like:

The idea is that it's an alien like The Thing, which breached the suit of another alien life form that has long since been consumed/assimilated (hence the skeletal arms and bits of flesh and blood, and the bits of rubber gloves on the hands) and now is piloted around by the creature, waiting to snatch up its next victim with the tentacle that creeps out of the crack in the dome.

Had some inspiration while in the Discord and came up with another set of sprites for the Cassnail line with a concept too interesting not to make. And as much as my mind would want to reject it I have to say the following: "Protecc the spoopy boi":

For the back sprite, I tried having Nightshade berries and a bud, but when it became clear that they weren't going to register at all, I settled on making two nightshade flowers instead, as well as an opening at the base so that it could have a literal butt-crack.

There was some back and forth when considering ideas for what should go on the backs of the evolutions. One idea was to have the haunted house's roof busted open in an eruption of ghostly smoke and spirits. But I decided to go for a little less garish and reserved look. With the ominous light in the attic being a focal point for the front sprite, and the open cellar door with a claw mark, and chains for the back. I also thankfully resisted the urge to try and bend over backwards trying to get the ghost arms to not obstruct the face at all, since I think that would've been impossible without messing up other details.

And finally, with the back sprite only being completed today we have the Halloween Escartress!
The first idea was to have a mausoleum with Gastlys and Haunters floating around it, and a Gengar sneaking around the back. But I felt the issue with the drastically altered scale would be too much to ignore. Then I also came into the problem of realizing that most mausoleums are actually really, really small. So this one was based on the mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the very first mausoleum in human history and one of the ancient wonders of the world. The next idea was to have it surrounded by smaller gravestones and a wrought iron fence, but aside from not adding much color, getting the fence to register properly would've been a pain in the ass at best, and impossible at worst. That's when I had the idea to have a nondescript evil orb bust up the columns and roof of the tower and infest the Escartress with darkness, not only providing a nice new visual element for the tower, but also providing a way to add some flair to the ghost part of the sprite, which was needed since it no longer had apendages to work with.

This was my first effort at creating the Halloween sprites. As the Discord server pointed out, it didn't look enough like Cassnail since it didn't have the antennae, and the arms, while appropriate, also only made it look even less like Cassnail.
I had begun to edit the sprite when I came to realize that the face bore an unfortunate and uncanny resemblance to the "Surprised Pikachu Face" meme:

Needless to say, changes were required:

However, once again, when posting on Discord it became clear that in my attempt to take creative liberties, I had made the sprite too big for it to resemble Cassnail even with all the revisions. So I made the difficult decision to scrap absolutely everything. Starting over and recoloring within certain bounds of the existing sprites. Needless to say, it was the right call.

Made icons for the Tubjaw line since the existing ones in-game are based on the old sprites:
