[Guide] [Competitive] Astronite

If for some reason, one would prefer to deal with another spectrum of pokemon than those hit by the Rock/Ground/Fire combo and use a combination of Psychic/Fighting/Ghost moves, Psyshock is a nice option that lets Astronite hit specially defensive pokemon for greater damage. Psyshock, Focus Blast and Shadow Ball don't get a Technician boost but Trace offers versatility. But if you say Rock/Ground/Fire is the best option to hit the whole dex for a least neutral damage...

Or they could run HP Fighting, Ominous Wind, and Psyshock/Psychic on a Technician set, if they wanted a more Powerful Ghost move that has a chance to boost all of their stats, or want a powerful Fighting STAB that doesn't have such a large chance to miss! Either way, they could make another set just based this variation alone, but what they have is quite decent, if I say so myself!

Omg Windos. I love you. I didn't think of a Technician-boosted Hidden Power. I need to build this Astronite asap.

Astronite is an interesting mon, since it has two subsets of way to have perfect coverage: Ghost/Fight/Psychic and Rock/Ground/Fire with any of its abilities (Technician works best, though). Based on that, one has to decide which coverage set is more optimal for it, their team, and what threats they need to face.

Rock/Ground/Fire deals with the vast majority of weakness that the living meteorite, and all the moves are phenomenal against the vast majority of the current metagame. Earth Power, the most spammable move on this triangle of types, is strong enough to deal with just about anything. It doesn't have the same strength as STAB Ancient Power does, but that move has less PP and is therefore not that optimal for frequent usage. HP Fire is just HP Fire, but it benefits from Sunny Day like all other Fire type moves, so it has some synergy on those team!

Ghost/Fight/Psychic, meanwhile, provides both ample Offensive and Defensive coverage for Astronite as well, but not to the same extant as R/G/F . However, its main STAB, Psyshock, has both STAB and the ability to go straight through Bulky Special Walls, which combos well with HP Fighting to clear out the Steel and Dark types that try to come in to block it. Ominous Wind works well taking care of other Ghost types not named Chainite, and hits just about everything else neutrally that Fight/Psychic can't. Its PP is still worrisome, but since its not it main STAB on this set and only rounds out coverage/provide the rare stat boosts, the users doesn't have to be so conservative with its usage.

This 'mon has a surprising amount of nuance to it, now that I think about it!

Geeze you guys type fast -_-

@Lord Windos : Magnet rise is kind of useless on Astronite since it still has 6 other exploitable weaknesses and would much more prefer to use a better setup move. Iron defense is in the same boat, I can’t really justify using it on this rock type since I can’t see it helping sweep, support or anything else. Calm Mind can work on the offensive sets, but is generally outclassed by the Nasty Plot sets because Astronite’s SpDf isn’t too good. Also Crocune Syrentide does it way better and with a much better typing.

Gravity COULD be an interesting move to use on it… but Astronite cannot really make use of it outside of Focus Blast. It has some team wide use but that makes it situational. Focus Blast could be good on one of your hypothetical Fighting/Psychic/Ghost coverage attacker sets, but would be outclassed if one uses HP Fighting.

Focus Blast: 120 * 70 = 8400 overall damage
HP Fighting (60*1.5) *100 = 9000 overall damage

-Though Focus Blast might be able to score more KO’s. Speaking of the set though, that set does have some use but the Rock/Ground/Fire is generally better for this meta. Looking at the threatlist through A rank, counting supereffective hits as +1 and double supereffective hits as +2, Roc/Gro/Fir has a score of 25 whereas the Gho/Fig/Psy gets 19, meaning the set I have posted scores more SE hits than this other one (discounting nuclears). That being said, if combined with Psyshock, this could let Astronite function as a pseudo mixed attacker (though atm I do not know how useful that would be).

@shademonkey : Yeah I’ll put Sturdy on that set in a minute. Must have been a typo because I swore I put it in there… as for the Defense thingy you linked, I have not heard of it. I come from Smogon, so that’s how I figure out EV spreads and whatnot.

I’ll make some edits in a minute because I did more calcs and it turns out Hidden Power Ice is a viable alternative to HP Fire, achieving perfect coverage while hitting ~ the same SE damage as fire did but with different threats.

To tag someone having a space in their username, just put it in "". Like this: @"user name"

There it goes. Many thanks, for some reason it works without quotes on shademonkey.

It's because Windos has a space in his usernamname. The tag ends up looking for a user with the name 'Lord' instead of 'Lord Windos.'  When it doesn't find one, nothing is linked.  And if someone were to claim that username, only the word 'Lord' would have a link attached if the quotes weren't used, and it would link to Lord's profile, not Windos's.

My my, @Lord Windos, the board cannot deal with your aristocratic title that easily, it seems!

Perhaps it should it elevate itself to my level first, if it wishes to bask in my presence! *Radiates pompousness and egotism*

Guys I noticed Astronite learns Psycho Shift, I'm reminded of something I saw once on Showdown on a Magic Guard Sigilyph :

Astronite
Trace
Flame Orb
Bold natured (+Def, -Atk) 252 HP, 140 Def, 116 SpDef
Calm natured (+SpDef, -Atk) 252 HP, 132 Def, 124 SpDef
-Power Gem
-Calm Mind / Cosmic Power
-Recover
-Psycho Shift / Trick

Spread burn while boosting your defenses. I know it's gimmick af, but who cares. Psycho Shift allows Astronite to burn multiple times while Trick lets you swap your orb for some Leftovers.
