Gaging Interest - A New Pokerole Campaign
#1
Exclamation
Hello everyone! Or, more accurately, hello Phantom, Spirit, Dragonstrike, Mika, no one, and (occasionally) Iron, since I sincerely doubt anyone else really visits the forums these days outside of nostalgia or needing to be pointed to the Discord. This place ain't what it used to be, eh guys?

Anywho, I've recently come to a realization of sorts - I really want to run one last Pokerole campaign, using all the ideas I've brainstormed ever since....well, Dragonstrike started his campaigns and the end of Iron's. More and more I see that if I don't do something with all that creativity and already established ideas I've made nothing will EVER get done, and all that potential fun for us all will be wasted unless I somehow muster up the courage to ask randoms online to, oh pretty please, play my game. Or start a IRL group, which is even more unlikely given my options there are quite slim indeed. Plus, I kinda just miss running a campaign myself with my friends here on the forums, and want to have a second-ish chance to do one more right than my last one . CCV was a blast and a ride, to be sure, but it heavily drifted from the earlier premise and ended up breaking some expectations I set out AND cause unneeded friction with my players because I was just too hamfisted at times in running the game. I want to do better, you know?

Thus, I ask you all - anyone interested in a new campaign? Obviously I want the you guys to join in, but if participating in two campaigns is a bit much I completely understand. Still, can't get anywhere without asking, right?

As for what the campaign is about....well, I don't want to get too ahead of myself, so I'll be brief. I plan on running a Full Length Campaign, much like Iron did, but with some key differences....

1. It'll be set in a completely custom region, and will be set in a AU of Iron's Skull Ruins campaign World. It'll have plenty of custom lore and deviations to set it firmly apart from theirs, however, and the game will be set a long time after the Events of SR. I'm more using Iron's world for all the neat ideas I want to expand and make my own twist on than truly following up to it, so if you are new or don't really want to dive back into old matters worry not!
2. No Traditional Gym Challenges. Instead, they'll be a different sorto of Grand Adventure PCs can default onto, as well as dealing with other conflicts that crop up to ruin your guys day. That, and your PCs may have goals they want to accomplish independent of everyone elses , depending on how you go about character creation!
3. Pokemon in the game's region will be drawn primarily from Jhoto, Alola, Tandor, Unova, the lastest Gen, as well as one Mystery Fan Game . There will also be a few custom Mons I made too, though they'll be few and far between unless I'm particular inspired mid-way through the game. The PCs themselves may start with whatever Pokemon they want, however, though the details about that process will be withheld until their is confirmed interest for the game.
4. The tone of the game is going to be 'Braving The Wilds' , 'Adventurous' , and 'Classically Epic' outside of Towns, though depending on PC actions the tone might make severe shifts up and down.
5. PC/PC Pokemon Death or Loss is on the table here - unlike Iron's campaign, were it was expected everyone would make it through until about the very end unless you did something VERY stupid or took a Known Death Flag Option for heroic/also stupid reasons, the risk to getting zeroed out or having your PC waylayed from the plot in myriad ways is relatively moderate if you don't play smartly, carefully, or have enough power and Plot Devices and Luck to cover your bums when the chips are down. The region the campaign is set in is fairly frontier-like and poorly civilized outside of a few key cities and other areas, and the journey between these locations can be looooong without the right transportation or guidance, so preparation and intelligent decision making it through to the end. Because of this and other details, expect the game to be a bit more grim and serious at times than what happened in ANY campaign thus far. More details about this will come if I the campaign gets enough PCs to start!
6. I have severely custom changes to the base Ruleset in mind, and will be carrying over many of the custom mechanics I made use of in my original campaign. I will also be borrowing from the changes Iron made to make his game possible, as well as implementing mostly the same Battle-Action System that runs combat encounters in Dragonstrike's campaigns. I'll make a Meta Thread that will hold all these custom rules, among how Character Creation and other things will go. Hopefully between all these campaigns I'll make the best of all worlds and not a complete mess!
7a. I'll have a set schedule for running and updating the campaign, with specific Dates and Times I'll be online to work on it and continue individual/group PC questlines. If anything changes or unexpected happens that would delay me I'll let you guys know ASAP. I DO expect anyone involved to post a response to Main Game Posts, at minimum, 24 hours after they go up, or 48 hours depending on the week's schedule. If there is a 4 or more day gap between Game Days, though, you may post whenever you please during that gap or within 24 hours after the start of the next Game Day if you are involved in an ongoing quest/Encounter/Battle/etc.. If you can't make a post within those timeframes I'll auto resolve whatever a PC was doing in that time and auto your character until you can find the time to 'resume control' and respond to oncoming events - I do not want the game to stall out unless absolutely necessary. You can leave me instructions on what you want your PCs to do in the event they get autoed, though, and if you can only play sporadically I'll try my best to meet you half-way to keep you involved and having fun.
7b. Player Interactions Post, however, can be started and dropped whenever, can can even be Flashbacked! to if the Plot ends up chugging ahead of when they happened (though do keep the pace in mind unless everyone is okay with holding up the Plot for awhile to just have those moments). You can also PM me stuff you want your character to do in secret from others, though I may have to throttle how many PMs I can take depending on how much room I have in my Inbox at the time. PC vs PC Battles are also a thing, though I would prefer they be scheduled between players at least 3 Days in advance so that we can all set aside some time for them,  as these fights are rather lengthy affairs due to all the PMs involved in the process.

And that should be everything for now! If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, or send them via PM if you prefer! Regardless of the response I get, I want to thank everyone for the great times we've had so far, and for at least humoring this ol' plodding fool and his whimsy for another go!

*...cough* Do count me in my dear, because I sure as heck do would like to join and play, yes pretty please! I'd need to properly read up on things and take my own notes beforehand, but that's not that much of an issue and definitely doable once I actually and finally sit down to do that. Am slightly worried about that meaning that I'll be technically active in two campaigns around the same time (which I remember being quite reluctant about at first), but on second thought that's...doable and alright to me, or at least I'd like to give it a good try. Especially given I've over the time involuntarily toned down on super-detailed and overly long response-posts that I used to throw out in Iron's campaign (for good or bad, I don't know either) AND the occasionally day-or-week-long breaks in between updates on Dragonstrike' campaign (no judging here).

Concerning point #5, that actually f#cking scares me. But I'm also not opposed to it? If that makes sense?? Probably not much, so do hear me out: Like, I/you know I tend to get emotionally attached to PC's and PC's Pokemon easily depending on things and almost certainly won't take either's loss or death well (am looking at YOU, Ventus, AND that time Claire [was it her? I think so] was heckin killed off by lethal Outrage from Mew), but at the same time the possibility of loss/death being there adds sort of a more serious/adult/grim/dark undertone to the campaign as a whole, which is a thing I tend to enjoy in media/videogames in particular. I'll 'just' do my best and put in extra-effort to not risk loosing my PC or any of their Pokemon, and should be fine.

Also question as it doesn't come off exactly clear to me: Does the 24h(or 48h)-time frame of responding to MainGamePosts mentioned in #7a only count for responses to Battle Rounds (aka post your next Actions within that time) or in general (aka it's omnipresent)?  I appreciate it actually settled like that to prevent long breaks/delays and to 'keep the mindset of playing/being involved' so to say, though also feel like it may clash with in-game situations where a too sudden move/action could lead to serious negative consequences for your PC, aka where you better think very well about what to do next. (Though in retrospect, it also depends on how often such situations actually come up)

I might be interested in joining?  Maybe?  I'm already GMing one game and playing in another that No One is GMing, and playing three campaigns simultaneously could potentially get rough.  With how the pacing of both has been playing out though, I could maybe manage it.

If Iron wants to join in, I'd definitely be interested in seeing how he performs as a player firsthand.  And I must admit I am curious to see how your storytelling may have evolved, Windos.

I do have some questions as well, though: if I happen to know someone in UCC that may be interested in joining a pokerole campaign, would they be welcome to join?  How many players are you looking to have at maximum?

*Claps hands* Well, this was exactly the turn out I hoped for! I’ll wait a bit more for others to answer before I start making plans, but I can tentatively say my campaign is going to get greenlit!

Now for the questions…

Phantom: The Time Window is In General in regards to all Types of Main Game Posts (ie one by me), or Player v Player encounters like battles or other stuff I deem can be run without my oversight. The time limit ONLY doesn’t apply when there is more than a 3 day gap between game days on the schedule or I say so, the later of which will always be announced either in game thread or the Meta. No slowness allowed on my watch!

Dragonstrike: We’ll, sure, they can join. I plan on having between 4 - 8 players, though I would prefer a smaller number. If you don’t want to be involved due to over commitment I can give you the same deal Iron gave Nylon, though that means your involvement will be sporadic and you’ll be airier by default unless you say something.

I'll play, I have some ideas for a character from way back when Dragonstrike introduced Mystery Dungeon. I'll probably have to take advantage of your autoing rules sometimes.

You're free to use anything you want from Skull Ruins and Creshire anyway you like. I'll try to do some bullet points about my planned ending - I wanted to do that long ago but never found the time. Rn I'm on a staycation and do have time, although Uranium is playtesting and I'm trying to publish a book and those take up some of my time.

Ah. To clarify for those that know, this campaign is unrelated to the Mythic Mayhem one I planned out, at least directly. I did barrow a couple of ideas and stuff from the main campaign I've been stewing over and procrastinating on to help build it up a bit. That means anything made for it, including the PCs, is not automatically eligible for use in my 'dream' campaign. Note the phrasing - if you want to play as that PC I can work with you on that front to 'convert' them to the new system, but before that is done I want to get ALL the Character Creation and Rules Stuff out for you to decide if that's the route you're going to go down.  Sorry if this comes as a bad surprise, dear....

(...)

Oh boy, Iron is interested in joining, at least part of the time! Only no one and this mystery person Dragonstrike mentioned hasn't weighed in yet on their opinion, but between Spirit, Phantom, Mika, and occasionally Iron we've reached the 4 Player minimum I've set out. Provided nobody changes their mind, I can officially say that my campaign is going to HAPPEN. I'll wait until Sunday (12/28) before I post the Meta Thread to give everyone time to post their interest/disinterest in joining, ask more questions, and perhaps even offer some suggestions or speculation as to what exactly will happen! Until then, I must thank you all for your support! Together, we'll make a game that will rival all others!!

I can give No One a heads up to see if he's interested in joining, but I'm not sure if he will given he doesn't check the forums super frequently.

Just talked with the invitee.  They're interested in joining!  Keep an eye out for RedstoneTest (that username should sound familiar to a few people here Wink )
