I believe being an Empath may have it's benefits - I've read about those lately out of curiosity - but it definitely isn't always benefitial...

Look at what just happened to Ralts and Ventus, for example.  Shudders

Yeah, being an Empath is a double edge sword. You get to feel, see, detect, and quite possible manipulate the emotions around you, but its a two way street as well. Bad Psychic and Fairy types could have a field day with untrained Empaths, but they would have hell to pay against savy ones.

Ventus had to deal with it his whole life, so he knows he to separate and bar outside emotions from affecting overly much. The Vespiqueen's majesty, however, nearly bulled him over until the anger kicked in. Yikes.
