As an example, say that the Porygon of Trainer 1 used it for data entry all the time, and so used him very logically in battle. Porygon learns from T1 how to battle 'Logically'. Then T1 decides he much rather be an arts major than a computer tech, so he trades away Porygon for a Smergle. The Smergle's owner, Trainer 2, is a whole lot more creative in his work and battle style, and has Porygon do far more elaborate plays in a battle. Now Porygon has learned/is learning how to battle 'Creatively' from T2, but that doesn't mean it has stop learning how to fight 'Logically'. Now it has two battle styles its learning simultaneously, causing it to gain more experience since, as its growing multiple battle styles rather than one.
Okay, so we thought of the exact same thing, basically.
