Edited my latest post to include the fact that Ventus is completely clueless about Sage's character intension. Remember, when in dangerous situations, he tunnel visions badly on whatever the threat is, unless he has a plan and/or he has something else to worry about on top of the danger at hand.

Which is great and all if this was a solo campaign.

If you want, I could just delete my post and just not react to things until Sage catches the beast. Other than that, I can't think of an in character reason for Ventus suddenly picking up on Sage's chara desire to capture the thing in the middle of battle, when said character has done nothing to vocalize or make known said desire. Ventus may be an empath, but even he capable of being distracted.

@Iron : Techinically speaking, the Poliwhirl is already knocked out, as Iron did not add the +1 damage to Apsis' first Thunder Fang attack, so the point is moot anyway.
