It sounds like one difference is that a nonlethal attack which faints you will never deal lethal damage - it doesn't wrap around.
If you have 1 hp, and you take 3 damage from a Water Gun, you have 0 hp.
If you have 0hp and you take 3 damage from a Water Gun, now you have 3 lethal damage.
If you have 1 hp, and you take 3 damage from a Water Gun, you have 0 hp.
If you have 0hp and you take 3 damage from a Water Gun, now you have 3 lethal damage.
