D&D has a similar rule - attacks against a helpless opponent are crits.
It's a good patch I think. If you dig back into the internet archives, when the game was released there were more than a few threads from irate players complaining about their trainers turning into fine red mist when it was ruled they could be affected by area attacks.
Though it does mean Plusle shouldn't have taken lethal damage from that Weezing's Self Destruct...but oh well, a bit late to retcon that now.
