[Meta thread] Iron's PokeRole Adventure: The Skull Ruins
It's more about the world. Think about it as a resident of the world. Would people just let you go around threatening to kill their beloved intelligent pets? No way. Murderous people are outed at the earliest possibility, and the cops often have the resources to do it.

99.99% of the people in the world would never behave the way Ventus does. Especially during the Pinsir encounter, when you had absolutely no reason to approve lethal force. It wasn't to protect your party, it was just random. A random stranger. Pokemon fight constantly in this world, and the appearance of a Pokemon is not an excuse to try to kill things.

If any character doesn't abide by the realistic expectations of the world, in public, there are going to be consequences. That's part of RPGs. You have choices, but you have to live by them.

Also, there is a general expectation that you're supposed to be heroes. That can mean different things to different people, but randomly killing characters just to seem edgy is never part of that.

It has nothing to do with teaching a lesson and everything to do with the realistic reactions of the characters inhabiting the same world you do.
