No, you can't send a Pokemon to fulfill another slot, because the item isn't discovered until you fill the slot.

However, you can send him out during any encounter and there's a small chance he'll find something interesting.

Well, its something, so glad I asked first! I think I'll have Corsola battle the bold sparrow, as I want her to have at least one battle where she can have a likely chance to win (Without being plounderized), and have Lucifer go of to see what he can find. After he Frisks the Sparrow for what it has first, though!
