Ventus shot awake at the sound of at sound of that distinctive howl echoing, looking hectically around the sandy clearing he was in, only to find that the night was too Kuyrem damn black for him to see anything. He also noticed that Apsis, who had been faithfully guarding his rest, was no where to be found, but he could detect that she was returned to her ball (Empathy is strong enough to feel her even through the Pokeball, because that's the only way I can thick Ven would know she was recalled instead of Kidnapped!).

I've always been partial to this explanation.
