Don't be a whiner. Gym leaders are challenges, and you're winning this one.

Chance dice aren't affected by curse so I'll add that in there.

I have my opinions, and I'll leave it at that. We may be winning, but I'm not having fun/a good experience, and if that isn't a failure of an encounter, I don't know what is.

This is normally true, but being challenged by a boss fight is fundamental to RPGs, and it's only been two rounds, and you have a companion player with you in this fight, so I think you should try to be more open minded.
