Circumstancial Evidence is still evidence, at the end of the day. For a officer like them, that is all they really need to press charges, or at least bring you in for further question with a Psychic type on hand to act as a Lie Detector/Mind Prober . That, and it doesn't hurt that their gut feeling is absolutely right, and that while you are being completely reasonable, they are not. On the bright side, most other Police Officers would just have carried on from your most recent explanation, but kept closer watch on you and your activities for the day.
