Each of his 4 Pokemon were probably worth 5XP, plus a bonus. Or maybe 6. Every point makes a big difference when multiplied across 4 Pokes. They still ended up with slightly less than they'd get if they performed two 3x3 battles, but of course they saved a lot of time, and got to use a pool of 12 Pokemon. I think that lends itself to interesting strategy.
