Nathan's isn't too bad, all things considered.  Mostly just a typical story about a kid who just didn't fit in.  His dad disappearing and finding a Ralts that nearly died just kinda make it an extreme case.

I kinda find it interesting that Nathan's so far the only character that has ongoing, direct connections to the plot so far (sort of.  Kirlia's the real connection for the most part), though. Well, again, that we know of so far.  Shiva; Ventus; Heart; and Larry came from out of region for their own reasons, Vincent works for Mallorn, Valder is so far only connected to the Scimitars, and Sage...was just kinda there as far as we know.
