Lolz, do I sense a dislike of the Absol for my Fairies or possibly Shiva herself, or is it just my imagination?

Nah, he just finds them annoying to fight since Absol don't typically have very many tools that make them easier to combat.  Look at his battle with Kirlia, for example  

And that's not even the worst case since Kirlia takes neutral damage from Night Slash.

And Calam gets along well with Kirlia, so it's mostly just battling the type that he dislikes.
