Well, that is kinda complicated. Nathan is quite a hard head. Reason with him doesnt work very much. Even Ventus say that to Heart when they are in disagrement. That side of Nathan was already a problem before Heart came? And if is, is getting worse or not?

Nathan's always been like this.  Ventus just brings out the worst side of it because his moral alignment is the complete opposite of Nathan's.  The problem's been present since our first visit to Ginger Town.  It's not really been getting worse so much as there's been nothing keeping it reliably in check.  Kirlia didn't stop Nathan this time because Ventus said something that offended Nathan, and it happened too quickly for Shiva to really have any time to say her piece.

Not to say Nathan isn't capable of much the same things as Ventus, you just have to REALLY anger him to get him to do something he considers so unacceptable (doing lethal damage to Kirlia is almost certain to get him there, but he can still be convinced to back down potentially even then.)  Nathan's also saving the bulk of his ire for something a little more specific than a random wild pokemon...
