In your defense, you did almost beat Nathan in that second battle. It all came down to a few bad rolls at the very end, and Nathan wasn't hindered too badly either.
There's one other thing to keep in mind here: we're playing with a system where the pokemon all share the trainer's stats (and pain penalties don't affect your damage, either). In base pokerole, they all have their own individual stats, and the strongest pokemon have some pretty large caps on their largest stats, but low caps on their weakest ones. In the original system, the individuality of each pokemon would help a little bit with that issue. But then it becomes harder to track all that information since each pokemon has its own character sheet.
When I eventually run my campaign, I do plan to use the original rule of each pokemon using their own stats rather than a trainer's, split Strength and Special again, maybe split Defense into physical and special, and see how that works. And don't worry, it's not going to be hard on the players' number of taken notes with the way I'm planning to run things. Should still be suitable for a play-by-post format.
