Shield moves are actually a LOT stronger in play around the table, because the rules allow for declaring actions in response to the opponent's on a whim. No need to specify exact conditions for evasions and such. If your opponent uses something you'd rather evade or shield and has a higher initiative than you, you can just go ahead and do so.
