Because any member of the team could easily beat Ash in some battle.

I disagree.  Ash is actually kinda boss.  Just cuz he can't ever seem to win a League tournament to advance to the Elite 4 battles doesn't mean he's super weak.  Nathan has a loooonnnnng way to go before he's on Ash's level. (Let's also remember that Ash has actually won one super major high level trainer battle thing: he beat Hoenn's Frontier Brains.  All.  Seven.)

This isn't really relevant to what's going on right now, though.
