A different trainer will see different results from the same Pokemon.
It also does some weird things to a pokemon's stats that you would never, ever expect from the species in normal circumstances. For example, a super fast Shuckle that can actually use Shell Smash effectively without Contrary (though to be fair, Shuckle is probably one of the Shell Smashers that cares about the Defense drop the least while still benefiting quite a lot from the Strength boost in the base rules.)
But I digress. Both systems definitely have their ups and downs.
