And since the release of Sun/Moon and US/UM, we did not see any new kinda of Mega Evolution. Gen 7 it is what I like to call: "The fanservice generation". His why: Team Rocket coming back, the Alola forms of old pokemon from Kanto, the Ash Greninja, Pikachu/Raichu/Mew/Snorlax receiving exclusive Z-moves (all these pokemon coming from Kanto), the Battle Tree, and of course the battle against Red and Blue. And of course the protagonist be from Kanto.
In matter of gameplay and new mechanics/competitive, I would not call something "extraordinary" like Gen 6 was who bring a lot of new features: Mega Evolutions, New Legendary pokemons, strong competitive pokemon, along with another few things. Thats at least was my point of view. I not saying Gen 7 is bad, but I would say it was...inferior to other Gens. At least in my opinion. I just hope Gen 8 bring something more cool and awesome. Better than Gen 7 I hope.
I want to remain optimistic that they'll revisit megas at some point. Partially because they still haven't made that Mega Flygon they wanted to do yet! And (in general) I don't think there would be many complaints about more megas.
I agree that Gen 7 felt a little...lacking in terms of the multiplayer experience. Gen 6 did it so much more cleanly and was the generation that introduced most of the big competitive QoL stuff, after all. Gen 7 single player was fine, though I definitely could have done with fewer unskippable cutscenes on repeat playthroughs.
