One last thing before getting back on topic: From what I've heard, Game Freak themselves don't mind the fangames; if I remember correctly, they are in fact happy that fans enjoy their games enough to make the games, it's the lawyers that are not happy with what we, the fan-game community do.

Yup yup.  Even C&Ded, work on these fan games is not wasted.  Sure, ya need to dodge a few bullets, but the ones that do really well can look particularly good on a resume, ironically.  I believe Involuntary Twitch mentioned sending in an application when that ama popped up on the subreddit.  Don't know how that turned out in the end, but iirc, Nintendo and/or Game Freak do actually encourage those who make fan games to apply for the actual jobs.
