If we failed/died to them, it would have been more than fair in my eyes (Bar terrible dice luck), since if we dropped the ball THAT hard or were underprepared....well, its probably deserved (for a given value). More hypothetical example would be Challenging and Dynamic Swarm Encounters (Like what the Ancestor Cave fight(s) were, before MEW showed up), fighting REALLY challenging Trainers, Gauntlet Courses, Clever Puzzles/Traps and/or Ambushes, splitting up the party in some manner and putting conditions on their fights, Massively Overgrown Pokémon, or ones with their stats pumped up so they remain a threat (Hello Skull Ruins Pokémon/Ghosts in general!)…..I could keep on listing things, but I won't.
Ah, these are all good examples, thank you. My favorite is probably splitting or seperating the group from each other and giving each one a foe that they'll likely struggle with but have chances to win against unless being really unlucky, like that one time where a horde of Pokemon came to us within Mount Sentry or when Heart was trappend and had to defeat that Cryogonal first.
Concerning Ambushes, you all have points in Alert (I guess) while I'm ignoring that Speciality/favoring other, means it might be only Shiva who'd end up being attacked suprisingly. That's the way it is though! *shrugs*
