Yeah...you kinda set yourself up for how that situation ended.  One of the things the Rangers mentioned was they got two calls, the first one from an anonymous source, the second from the victim.  And given that there were only two people in the nearby area that weren't party members, there's only one person that could have made the anonymous call.  So while the Mega Pinsir Trainer did call the rangers, it was the innocent bystander that was the trigger that fired the smoking gun created by blending too much OOC knowledge with IC.  The fact that Sage made off with the incriminating Pinsirite didn't help matters any, either.

Objectively speaking, to an IC outsider with no knowledge of the situation, it looked entirely like you shot first at some random dude who was passing by, asked questions later.  And there was little to no proof in the aftermath that at least some of those IC choices were justified.

....If I am to be judged wanting for Ven's actions against that Scimitar, then I rather it not be by anyone else but Iron. Since he's not rubbing my face in it. Or making me feel more bitter and screwed over by that ignoble incident.

As for the metagamming aspect, it still benefited you even though it backfired on me/Shiva/Sage, so I rather not be criticized doingthat.

There's more than one perspective in any situation, and Ven was/still is excellent with it comes socialization, reading people, and general politcking + other stuff due to his empathy (or 'empathy' , as Iron has retconed it) , and he....resourceful when pressed, so he could have spun things in his favor if given a chance and time. Problem was that neither would have been given to me, since Iron set a short deadline and refused to entertain any arguments I/Ven made in my/his defense, which is his prerogative....but still stings like nothing else. 

To this day I find that incident either horribly unfair, mean, or both, even if and perhaps because Iron was perfectly within his rights to blight me (and Shiva/Sage, to a lesser extent) for Ven going a bit extreme, but took that right an went the extra mile with it. I understand there must be consequence that must fit with every action, but was it necessarily to sear them straight into me and Ven?
