Will that non-battle stuff expend an Encounter for me or not? If it won't, I choose to save an Encounter Slot here to head into the diner and eat something neat with her Pokemon/play out anything you'd maybe bring up. That free Slot will be used later for Crafting or Training if it hasn't by the end of the Day. Sounds like a plan?

Either way you wouldn't get the benefit of the Encounter slot. You're basically choosing not to participate in this round, which is fine.
