The chances of a chain continuing is 24/49/74/99 - so there's always at least a 1% of failure chance no matter what you do.
Those different chances are based on how far away the grass patch you encounter is - farther away is better.
So tip 1 is to use PokeRadar in the biggest patch of grass you can find, and then always pick the farthest option.
But sometimes all the grass is pretty close to you, and there's actually something you can do about it. Keep walking around INSIDE the patch of grass, WITHOUT hitting any of the patches, until your radar is recharged. Use it again and your chain will not start over, but you'll get more grass patch options.
If anyone can correct me on this please do.
Thanks, apparently I was following a rule that works with the official games, which was that you'd automatically fail if you chose a patch of grass on the edge of the area. *shakes head* All those hours and repels wasted...
