Presumably everyone gets together at the Pokemon Center before heading off to TV, so the steely brawler makes sure to check on everyone to see how they are doing. With Nathan, he asks when they could do the Battle they were talking about, as the chance to do that was rapidly dwindling away as The Comet crept closer and closer to earth. 

"Probably won't be doing that until we reach Elanor and have easy access to a Pokemon Center.  Wouldn't want half our teams to be KOed and/or weakened if a rather strong wild pokemon were to show up, right?"

Or if the Skull Ruins Exploration Permit comes in and they can finally head to the Ruins to explore them without getting pestered by the Rangers and/or Police.

That, and it gives Nathan just a liiiiiitle more time to practice and train before having another go at trying to surmount Terra's almost insurmountable defenses...
