You could theoretically hold Doublade already, no surprise needed, as long as he's obedient. But it wouldn't have many benefits.

A 100XP Surprise should come with some kind of awesome benefit, like maybe adding extra damage dice at the cost of Heart being targetable by foe Pokemon, and the aforementioned risk of life drain!
