Gifts can still be given, just more moderately and if there's a certain bond or liking: For example, Shiva would barely hesitate to hand something to Ventus if she'd come across something he can put into good use. Same with Spira I guess because he's her senpai.
...and that's the million dollar reason why I'm tired of this 'who owes who' system we have in place.
Maybe it's just the shock from the recent events concerning the Sword talking, but damnit, I've stayed quiet about this long enough. I've been trying my darndest to have Nathan be friendly with everyone in the group for a loooooonnnnngggg time now, and yet it rarely ever feels like I make progress with Shiva, if any. She's STILL the only character that Nathan has no idea how to approach most of the time.
And even as a group of people who have been traveling together for a couple months (or have happened to get along really well for one reason or another), we often times still don't seem to act like it. It's just...*sigh*...
...doesn't help that the item in question this time is super duper important and high priority on my wishlist because it's for Nathan's closest companion, or that Lunapup* is the encounter I wanted to do originally, but that's besides the point. *sigh*
If the item in question were something that you might have a use for beyond selling it, I'd honestly think trading for it would be more appropriate/justified.
