...everyone sees the image of a Houndoom suddenly appear in the room, a pokemon that Diam had seen accompanying a random trainer in the Pokemon Center, and a pokemon that Karen was trying her best to subtly avoid.

Fortunately, it's easy to tell it isn't an actual Houndoom, as the image is transparent.  But in the heat of the moment, that might not be very obvious at all when Karen turns around and sees it...

Eeeehhh! Octavia's still enjoying Karen's company, and in the heat of the moment her desire to protect the young lady is stronger than her wariness and skepsis of Fire Types: She takes a defending stance in front of her and sharply hisses at that make-believe-doomdog, but her ears are lowered as a sign of subtle fear. Probably won't make a move herself unless that 'dog' comes too close. Or until Karen herself asks her to deal with it.
