It's quite interesting to me to see how about everyone I know in real life looks down on playing Pokémon (except if it's Go, then it's acceptable, apparently), while Pokémon seems to be a really big thing online.
I haven't been part of this community for long enough to really know where everyone is from here- but I can still relate, since I've been part of another community centered around a Pokémon fangame for several years now. It's baffling to see how I have met people that feel the same way about a lot of things as I do, and despite the fact that I most likely will not meet the majority of them in reality once, I still count a good deal of them as some of the best friends I have ever made.
Not only that, it made me more aware of politics, economic situations, etc. in other countries. So in a way, it made me wiser as well. Despite being initially discouraged to get into forums by literally about everyone around me irl, I'm still glad I did anyway, because I've grown as a person thanks to that.
