Karen silently and patiently listens to Randolph as he reveals his backstory.  When it starts to get grim, her eyes get wider and she covers her mouth with her hands as she silently gasps.

"...that...that's horrible...I'm so sorry..."

Something about Randolph's story is bothering her beyond the obvious details, though...

"...is it just me, though...or did what you just describe sound similar to how Espeon described Shadow Pokemon earlier?  I mean, that was obviously a long time ago, so it probably wasn't, but...something about that doesn't sound right to me..."

*Flashback* 

Randolph frowned deepened as he witnessed the wee lass' reaction to that most dark day of his life, and he could only nod along as she stammered out exactly what he thought of the whole ordeal.

"Indeed, lass. Indeed. And don't apologize for any of that. Only ones that should be sorry for that....that travesty is me and that black abomination."

Her conjecture about the Black Onix made him go still as it sparked off a whole bunch of thoughts about that, before he suddenly turned to face Karen, his grim, pained, and plain angry (Not at her!) expression now on full display to her.

".....No, I think you're on to something. Don't recall seeing any of that Shadow Aura bursting off from that black hell beast's body as it.....trampled my men, but its behavior matches those ruthless berserkers to a T. *Shakes head* ....Maybe its this Tauros shit supernatural mystery force wearing on me like a file and screwing with my head like a phillips power-drill, but....there might be some connection between it[/b, them Shadow Pokemon, or the mess we're in. Heatran know what that is, though. All I know for certain is that [b]Black Onix is twisted monster, and one that need to be removed from the face of the earth."
