Mason will agree to help you research a Pokemon in battle, or point you to a researcher who can better help.

Sweet! Then after Nathan's battle with him, he'd request they take him to a private arena/room for the battle (Nathan is free to join, if he wants), then he'd ask the MIGHTY MASON! not to spread too much word around about the Pokemon he's about to summon. Perhaps they'd think him a bit paranoid at first, but assuming they agree to all his requests Terra would summon Arete, his adorable (to him) little Genesect, and then the Gym Leader would probably understand why the sagely monk was/is so secretive about it all.

After making sure his mini Mythic was not going to attack anyone (She was giving Nathan the stink-eye despite that, for she hadn't forgotten how his Pokemon denied her a powerful and tasty meal), he'd turn to the studious architect and motion towards his partner, looking quite formal and respectful.

"Mason, this is Arete, my Genesect. She's.....aggressive, but won't do too much harm to your Pokemon. Listens to me very well. So....how do you want to carry out research? Show off her attacks? Mock battle or spar with your Pokemon? What....processes and methods are used to research Pokemon.....in battles or combat?"

Terra's geniunely curious to know the answers to these questions, as he's trying to get his own lab off the ground and getting into the Pokemon research field/industry. He has to know this sort of stuff, if he wants to be even decent at his position as Chairman/Head Research of his lab!
