Good plan for blowing away the steam. It is successful, though you're seeing that the tube is producing more steam constantly. Looks like it is supposed to go into those turbines, but something went wrong and much of the steel is melted away. There's only the smallest melted hole in the steel tube, not even big enough to see inside, but this is the source of all the light and most of the steam.

The geiger counter in your haz suit is going crazy.

As for your question about the safety of the tube, there's an easy answer to that. Five or six blackened human skeletons are scattered around the base of the tube. One particularly broad skeleton is still wearing a mechanical exoskeleton, used in the lifting of heavy items. The facemask is shattered. The owner looks like they curled up in the fetal position, their broad back to the ceiling.

There are also some vulpine Pokemon skeletons around the room, all blackened and irradiated. A few tufts of fur and scales announce that two of them were Flareon and Vaporeon respectively. Another was probably still an Eevee. The rest cannot be known.
