It might be possible to dig under the rock or loosen it to unblock the path, but neither Pyra nor Daxter are very well equipped for digging right now, so doing so would likely take longer than just going around the rock.
The Trapinch don't appear to be holding anything, nor does anything seem to be hidden among the gravel at first glance.

When Pyra and Daxter double back to their starting point (nothing happens on the way back) and check the cave they exited from, they find that a large rock has blocked the path there, too. The cave is completely inaccessible now. How very strange...
The large tree that's obstructing the other route still stands as a daunting (but possibly easier) obstacle in the way of the duo's progress as well.
