The italics gets stuck sometimes. If it does that, just go in and edit your post.
BTW, you can ping someone (it will generate an alert) with @username, just as you asked. I haven't figured out how to make it work for users with a space in their name (like @John Tsoukalos up there!), but it'll work with names without spaces -- like you, @owlsomniac... see?
