It is because it makes a Pokemon go beyond it's form and get a new and a powerboost? Or it is because it was the first gamechange appearance in 3D game before Z-Moves and Dynamax/Gigantamax, and it pure liked/loved by pure nostalgic thing?
If the first answer, then couldn't we say Z-Moves and Dynamax/Gigantamax kinda do the same function as Megas? Or if is the later answer, then the other "visual" mechanics would get more love if it was made "first"?
I did see the question made on a YouTube video a long time ago, and I question myself that. I kinda know my answer, but I wanted to hear you guys insights on that topic, because you people opinions is awesome and epic, I always made think about things.
I think megas are the most popular because there's both a lot of strategic depth to choosing your team's mega as well as the mechanic just looking and feeling cool to use as well. The mechanic does a really good job of putting a spotlight on specific pokemon and showcasing them in a new and unique way while making the pokemon (usually) feel a lot better to use in battle. That's something that Z-moves only rarely did, and that Gmax and Tera only did successfully with very particular pokemon. Megas just feel a lot more focused and targeted in what they're trying to do, and are generally very consistent in achieving both the cool factor and the usability benchmarks.
Or to put it another way: Megas are essentially entirely new pokemon, which is a heck of a lot more exciting for the average player than 'surprise big nuke', 'surprise supersize pokemon', and 'surprise type change mf!'
