You don't have to keep 'em.
Just like in the games you can sell things for half price, or find someone to trade, etc.
Battlers will also generally accept Pokegoods as collateral, at half price.

...Awesome.
Awesome indeed. Too bad Nathan dislikes catching wild pokemon without their consent.
Well, keep them anyway I guess! You never know if they come in very handy in a situation... Plus, there's also the opportunity to store items in it for easier carry.

You're not wrong there. And there is always the chance that Nathan's opinion could change. Or the wild pokemon could desire to travel with a trainer. Probably some other situations he'd be fine with too. There's more than one way to get around that little quirk.

If anything else, you can just give them to either Vincent or Ventus (And maybe Larry, if you are feeling risky). We have no qualms beating the stuffing out of wild mons, and we can garitee them a good home~ Ventus is nothing else but a good with almost everyone (eventually).

@ Iron
Does the item encounter slot take the entire time it takes to resolve the other encounters? Or does it resolve a round or two into the others, allowing for other actions to be taken in that time?

It takes the whole time; you are exploring for a while and then you find it.
Plus combats only take a minute or two of fighting, then a whoooole lot of resting.

Oh! Windos, looks like Shiva might finally get the chance to talk with him, bringing up some questions towars Ven concerning a few things she's still wondering about. You know, he mentioned being from Unova... And taking classes in Advanced Pokemon Handling.
That is, if no plot happening prevents this.

He'll happily share his knowledge with her if she ask, my darling. As a matter of fact, he'll just be happy to get to know you, as he wants to really to be friends with everyone in his group. Hopefully Cottonee takes a shine to him as well!

I might not have used the skill in a little over a decade (probably more than that estimate even), but I've decided to give drawing a little of Trillium a go with good ol' pencil and paper since I remember just enough of simple drawing techniques to make it look not terrible. And colored pencils once that's done. I think it's looking decent so far, but the real fun has yet to begin...details are hard, man. Particularly when they're tiny because of the relative scale of things. blegh.
