[Game thread] Skull Ruins Pokerole
"Tanuki's Gym is in the northwest quadrant of town. It can be easy to miss, because it's such a small and simple building. Painted white, and probably swarming with Pokemon. Just look for the gym symbol! Yes, Tanuki is very easygoing. She studies the potential of the Normal type, and she likes to use her Pokemon for community service, not just battling. "

The waiter takes an order for some treats for two people and a few Pokemon.

"Creshire's science does possess the ability to alter genes, but it's such a time consuming and expensive trial-and-error process that often takes more than it gives. But I think what we have here is genetic drift. That's when a family of Pokemon, or sometimes a population, is separated from the others for some time. Differences begin to emerge, until they are solidified in the Pokemon's phenotype, or appearance. These changes do not always breed true, but they are then carriers for the mutation. "

"The more beneficial to a Pokemon's particular needs, the more likely it is to come up again. No, it's not necessary for other exemplars to die for this to work. It's a subtle process of nature reacting to the Pokemon's needs. Why, hundreds or thousands of years ago, Pokemon were very different from their current forms! That's of especial interest to Legendary researchers, for they have the longest lives of any individual Pokemon, and it's possible to see just how they have changed. Creshire is home to many of the oldest Pokemon, and their kinfolk in your home region, and the other regions, they are the newer and more specialized versions!"

"It used to be impossible to confine any powerful Pokemon within an Apricorn, but, as humans became a more important factor in the landscape, some theorize they adapted to work with humans. Some items can cause a Pokemon to throwback to its earlier genetic code, though they will still lack the power of their original counterparts. Why, Eevee used to be a large wolflike being with matted fur! Leafeon was a slimy green thing. My favorite Legendary, Keldeo, is described in Unovan legends as a cute quadruped. In Creshire, he's described as a fierce warrior with eyes of flint! Landorus, who was once well known in Creshire, is sometimes drawn as an old man instead of his Unovan appearance of a floating cloud...thing. Some say he has other forms, as well!"

"So, boss, in summary: Your special Poochyena there is probably some sort of drifted Pokemon, not quite like a Delta, who may possibly be the only phenotypically winged Poochyena in all the world! Even if the others are carriers of the mutation, you see. And I should stress again, since it seems you have bonded with this Pokemon: mutations are not a bad thing. In fact, they're not a 'thing' at all. They're just a difference. It would be just as easy to claim that normal Poochyena are the mutated ones. They just share common ancestry with one another, manifested in different ways."

"Let me write some of this down...my, I've said some of those things in ways that I'm rather proud of. I'll push an update to the Pokedex right away. 'Creshire's science does possess the ability,' hmm, yes..."

...eventually, Nathan closes his journal and begins talking about Sarimanok.  Orthros comes over to sit in Nathan's lap since everyone's in a quiet, secluded corner of the library in the Cathedral.

A King's Fall: King of Hyrule's Theme - Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

"...Sarimanok used to be a good king from what we know.  To some degree.  Undoubtedly, he was brilliant, and it was that mind of his combined with the treasury, his alchemists, and the Legendaries that allowed him to accomplish so much.  He invented the Healing Machines the Pokemon Centers use to this day, helped create many strange and wonderful hold items for pokemon to use in battle, had made allies of many Legendary pokemon...from what I've read, he used to be loved by the people of Creshire, praised for everything he did for them and the region."

"...but when Landorus left his position as the head of the Royal Trio and abandoned Sarimanok, things grew dark.  Sarimanok had lead Creshire into a golden age of prosperity...but darkness soon shrouded the land when he suddenly became almost the exact opposite of who he was before.  A rebellion ensued, and the resistance called themselves the Pokemon League.  They'd managed to make allies of some of the Legends Sarimanok had not, the ones that hadn't deemed him as being worthy of being king, though not all of them had outright opposed him until he fell from grace, as he would have never become king if they had."

"...it was mid-September that the League finally managed to push back Sarimanok's Legends, his alchemists' mechanical bugs, keep the ones they couldn't defeat distracted and far enough away from the castle that the League could breach the walls.  It was a hard fought victory for the League.  Some say Sarimanok met them with a Charizard by his side and an Aegislash in hand, all while sitting on his legendary Throne of Skulls, made of the bones of many Charizard past.  None can really say for sure what's fact other than he fell by the League's hand, and was executed for the various atrocities he'd committed.  It's not a tale with a happy ending as far as Sarimanok himself is concerned, and it took decades for the region to fully recover.  We owe much to Sarimanok...but just as many despise him for how he nearly brought Creshire to ruin via civil war.  September 27th is the day the First League officially established itself as the government body here, and there's an...interesting celebration each year to commemorate that."

Nathan pauses...and then turns to a different page of his journal.  One towards the back of his journal.

"...I once came across an interesting, happier tale about a king, though.  It's not a tale many recognize, and I only heard it the one time from a strange traveler who visited the ranch one day.  There's usually no reason to tell it.  But it's one I quite like."

"I've never been able to figure out exactly how much of that is true, and how much is fabricated.  It sounds to me like a tale about one of the earliest kings in a way.  It's a time that's since been lost to the deepest depths of time for the most part, sadly...but I do find the care the story's young king had for the people and pokemon to be...inspiring, I guess."

Well, that oughta warrant at least a few interesting reactions from some of those listening. (which should be Princess, Zippy, Furret, and Heart.  Forthright probably doesn't count very much in this instance.)

Heart listening all this story. With so deep awe about with that tale, similar to a lot histories in the past of epic legends and tales, of mythic heroes and corrupt kings. Sarimanok was a great king. For both sides of the coin: Good and evil. How much a nobre king and person can become such terrible thing. Unfortanely for Heart, he know something about that. Good and evil always hunt his soul. His past and future fight each other. Legends about villains and heroes always create like that. It took many minutes to finally spoke.

"Sarimanok...there is no doubt that man its a imortalized legend. No wonder why so many people know about him in this region." Heart then looks in the window, with that legendary pokemon along with humans. "Since we are in the mood for stories, let me tell one I know."

Then Heart begin to tell his story.

The Tale of Thousand Years: Wild Arms 2 - Battle vs. Lord Blazer [Extended w/ DL Link] (2k subs!)

"Many years ago, after the great War of Kalos, the regions was in pure havoc. Evil and chaos ruled without the guidance of the justice. To maintain the peace, seven knights, one of each region, unite their forces. Their gather allies, form links with many many people, to help put a end in the chaos. But their do that in secret. Their identities was maskered. Their names have been forgotten, only to be remember by few. The descendants would someday make clans, to secret train powerful trainers, in case each of their home regions might need. But after so long time, even their descedants would might became corrupt. And even them would forgot their goal."

"The might Kaot from Kanto, the green knight. His Venusaur could bring fear and put their foes to eternal sleep or paralyze them. Ferocious Vaira from Johto, princess of seas. They say her rage would bring the dowfall of their foes, bring to life with her Feraligator sea power who bring the terror of deeps itself. They say the only person who could bring her peace was Kaot, who they say they loved each other. The Wiseman of metal, Malos of Hoen. They say he was the most wise and old from between them, the one who once unite them. With his Metagross, he was the one who show age make a soul strong as steel. Ark the united from Sinnoh, the master of flames. With her Infernape, she was the most impulsive of the seven, sometimes she have appear in the frontlines of the battlefield. But even with temperament, they say she have a heart made of gold. Celenia of Unova, tamer of dragons. They say she have a strong link with the dragons, and she would tame and understand the very language of the dragons. Her symbol was Axorus. The mysterious Oug of Kalos, the keeper of dark and light. He was one of the strongerst between them. They say to find equilibrium, he learn to tame the powers of two opositive types: Dark and Fairy. Little is know about him. And finally but no less important: The fierce defender, Koolu of Alola. Together with his fighting pokemon, he use strengh not to attack, but to defend. His symbol was Komo-o."

"Together, they bring peace. But when their job not anymore necessary, they create seven clans, each one from every region. Theyre names would was forgot by the sands of time, only to be remember by some choosen people. If that story is true or not, I dont know."

Heart then finally finish his story.

If it is OK with you, you've attracted a tiny crowd of four Cathedral-goers, who are delighted to hear stories being swapped. Two kids have pulled up comfy chairs, and an older couple is smiling at each other while leaning against a heavy bookshelf. They look nostalgic. One murmurs to the other, "I do love a good story."

You can also each have 1 XP.

Nathan quietly listens to Heart's story.

...he's not quite sure what to make of it.

"...well...I definitely haven't heard that one before."

...

...when did they get an audience?

...

...well, this was slightly embarassing...but also a tad flattering...he hadn't thought his story was THAT interesting...

Did Furret, Forthright, and the bees seem to enjoy the story time, @Iron?

Heart was a bit embarassed when he finish the story and croud was around them. "Huh, sorry about that. Somtimes I get distract then telling that story. My grandma used to telling that story many and many times of the past after training sessions. About my clan." Then Heart reveal his ultimate truth. "Ark after her deband, forge a clan in Sinnoh, who follow the path of the Creation pokemon: Palkia, Dialga, Giratina and Arceus itself. The symbol of that unit was Palkia and Dialga in the top, Giratina in lower part, and Arceus as the middle of the symbol, as the core of the creation." Then Heart show a collar he carry with him. A silver one with the creation pokemon forming the symbols. "The symbol itself simbolizes a heart, something to remind us and never forget the divine things is conect to earth. "Ark" and "Heart". In honror to them, Ark name his new clan, as "ArcHeart". "Arc" with "C" no "K". Guess I dont need to say more yes?"

Then Heart look to Nathan. To expect Nathan reaction with revelation.

No reaction besides stunned silence can really describe what Nathan's feeling right at that moment.  It's followed by a single question.

"...do you mind if borrow that symbol real quick?"

Oh! Guess Shiva will look out for that simple white building resembling a Gym, simply to see it by herself. It sounds like a comfortable place, especially if it's swarmed by Pokemon of the versatile Normal Types one can imagine. The imagination of that gave her comfortable feeling, drastically different than from that defensive castle Dagny's Gym was. "Thank you! I'll take a look at Tanuki's Gym later then... What amazes me somewhat, is that she doesn't seem to be much older than I am, and yet she is a Gym Leader... But the age doesn't seem to be a factor to become one." *coffee-sipping noise while she lets that thought sink in into her* It's somewhat obvious that this somewhat fascinated her about Tanuki.

She also listened with attention what Professor Mallorn had to tell her about the oddity of her special Poochyena, occassionaly displaying minor reactions like a suprised expression upon the opening that Chreserian science is capable of altering a Pokemon's genes, a bit of relieve that other Pokemon had not to die unnaturally to make a genetic drift happen (as sometimes, naural disasters can cause this drift!), some thoughtful and awed expression upon the cottoning on that her tiny butterwolfly could possibly the only one of the whole world, and sometimes simple nods to show that she's listening. Once he finished, Shiva didn't reply right away, but repeated the words in her mind once again to make sure she understood and remembered this, while silently beckoning Yena to her to stroke over his ears and take look at these tiny butterfree-wings from closure again, before she'd let him dig into the brought treats by the waiter again.

She felt very lucky that this genetically drifted Poochyena has coincidently leaped onto the Main Street of Route 4 right in front of her, and confirmed in her desire of having her ID and OT on this special Pokemon. She'll keep this Poochyena forevermore, this got somewhat solidified more than before during this lunch with Professor Mallorn.

"....Whoahw..', was at first everything Shiva was capable to say, before more words came. "Thank you for such a insight on this weird Pokemon of mine, Professor. Genetic drift I know... When breeding Pokemon professionally at home, we practically induce a milder form of it, as we desire for the genes determining a good IV Value to increase. Sometimes, the offsprings have hatched with a recessive Ability or when the correct genes are passed on and it comes to a minor...'mutation', the hatcling have been shiny. So, it's...roughly the similar with this Pochyena, the population or family of rare - how rare are Pochyena in Chresire actually? - breeds among themselves while we select parent Pokemon, and the results may or may not be 'different' from the parents, correct? 'Differences begin to emerge', you say, among with 'the more benefitial this alteration, the more likely it is to come up again'... But by Reshiram's holy name, I do not yet fully understand why these butterfree-wings giving him Shield Dust Ability and slight biolumiscence would be benefitial for a Poochyena, but maybe it lowers the disturbance during hunt by blocking effects with this Ability, or the small hunting pack can communicate to one another via leaving some shedded shield dust behind? Hmm... But I believe that'd be simply my task to find out, is it, Professor?"

"I only know small and brown Eevees with silky fur apart from those with a shiny sliverly coat, so it's....a tad bit difficult for me to imagine it as a large wolflike Pokemon with matted fur... But I do admit that simply he thought of how much Eevee has changed then seems amazing. It must have....completely adapted to its environment, like it usually does... Do you happen to have a picture of these Old Eevee, Professor?" (Would Telperion University's Library possibly have?)

"And, uhm, yes, I'd agree to you that mutations don't necessarily have to be something...bad, but simply the ring of 'mutation' resounds a tab bit negatively within my ears. Benefitial ones are, well, exactly that, while Delta Pokemon feel like a bit of too drastic alteration for my view... Any wild ones seem to have adapted to their surrounding and eventually developed different traits, appearance and even type, a little like the regional variants of Kanto Pokemon in the distant and isolated islands of Alola, but...how Scientists somewhat caused the Pokemon to change by using the electromagnetic waves of Holon's Research Tower, just no...."

Shiva paused a little here, defended herself from thinking too much about these Delta Pokemon now by having more coffee and muffin, then eventually changed the topic a little. "Oh! Professor, this reminds me.... How's Nymue, that Skrelp I've sent you over, doing? And, you mentioned Keldeo already - hehe, well, I wanted to ask whether there are sightings of Keldeo here in Chreshire, at all? I know this mythi- ...*cough', Legendary Pokemon, but indeed only the Unovian one. Is Chresire's Keldeo an even fiercer warrior, as you describe it, than when being in it's Resolute Form? Would it be safe to approach it if spotted, or does it pose an aggressive nature?"

"For pictures of Primal Eevee, I would indeed check Telperion's library. Hm, what else? Poochyena is pretty common in Stair City and elsewhere. Evolution - of both kinds - is an amazing thing! The more research you can send to me about it, especially with this Poochyena you already have, the better! Oh, Keldeo. Keldeo is a fearsome warrior, but there's no reason to believe he would attack without some reason. He'd be more likely to flee if you even encountered him."

"What else did you ask, boss? Oh yeah, Skrelp! She's still in training. I'm hoping to have her used to carrying small packages by the time she becomes a large Dragalge."
