Once Karen's confirmed to the Gym Guide that she is indeed challenging this gym, he nods to her enthusiastically.  "Alright!  That's exactly what I wanted to here!  You aren't one to back down from a challenge, are ya?"

He turns around and waves to the trainer standing on the pedastal at the far end of the ice rink.

"HEY CANDICE!  LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE GOT A CHALLENGER!"

The person on the pedastal waves back.

"Send 'em on over, then!  Candice's pokemon are all warmed up and ready to go!"

The gym guide turns back to Karen.

"Well, when you're ready, just slide on over to the pedastal and start chatting that lady over there up!  Trust me, she's as friendly as she looks."

Karen slips and slides across the ice, and after nearly falling, ends up in front of the lady;
"Name's Karen, are you Candice? Kinda weird to refer to yourself by name."

"Nice to meet you, Karen! Yup, that's me!  Candice, Gym Leader of Snowpoint City, at your service!  I don't always refer to myself like that, by the way.  I think it's kinda cute, though."

Candice holds out a hand, offering a handshake.

Fun Fact (courtesy of Bulbapedia's Trivia section):

Quote:Candice's habit of speaking of herself in the third person is a very literal translation of her Japanese speech. In Japanese, children often refer to themselves by their own name, making such speech patterns childish or cute.

Candice looks to be in her mid to late 20s, by the way.

"So, just here to challenge the gym, or was there some other reason you need to challenge Candice?  How many badges have you got and how strong would you say your pokemon are?  Candice needs to figure out how difficult to make this battle for you, after all!~"

Badges aren't the only thing that count for scaling Gym Leader for obvious reasons.  It's hard to tell if Candice is just making small talk or actually taking her job seriously, though!  It might even be some weird combination of the two...

Karen accepts the handshake; "Yeah, I'm here for the badge, got two Sinnoh badges, and the Mineral badge from Johto, but you probably wouldn't count that one."

Candice looks at Karen carefully after that response.  For some reason, she gets the feeling that this teenage girl in front of her has a lot more than just 2-3 gym badges...

"...hmmmm...well, alright then."

The Ice type Gym Leader then turns and shouts at one of her gym trainers near the edge of the ice rink.

"Hey Isaiah, level the battlefield, would ya?"

The Ace Trainer in question salutes and heads to a console nearby as the other gym trainers all quickly (and gracefully) move out of the center of the room.  Once everyone's clear, Isaiah presses a button, and a retractable floor covers the pit in the middle of the ice rink!  *kachunk*  It looks like a standard Pokemon League Battlefield now!

Albeit one covered in ice, of course.  This is still a skating rink, after all.

It's also like a switch has been flipped for Candice's personality, too, as she entirely stops referring to herself in the third person now that she's about to get involved in a battle.

"I'm ready when you are!  Go ahead and take your position on the opposite end of the battlefield!  The referee will tell ya the rules before we begin."

Athletics check to get there:
(5)(1)(1) Karen slips and falls this time, being the klutz that she is.  One of the gym trainers helps her get back up and maneuver over to her position on the battlefield.

The referee takes her position on the side of the battlefield so she can officiate the match.  She holds up a green flag.

"Is the challenger ready?  The challenger may use up to 6 pokemon, while the Gym Leader will use 4.  No items besides what the pokemon are holding are allowed, the battle will be a Singles match, and the pokemon will battle until they can no longer fight. Pokemon may each only use 4 unique moves in this battle as well.  The challenger may switch pokemon freely after every Round of combat.  On three, both combatants will send out their first pokemon simultaneously.  1...2...3!"

The flag is swiftly brought downwards to signal the battle's start.

Which pokemon is Karen sending out first?

"Ow..." she rubs where her body slammed into the ice;
"Go, Magneton!"

"I've been waiting for someone tough! But I should tell you, I'm tough because I know how to focus. Pokémon, fashion, romance... It's all about focus! I'll show you just what I mean. Get ready to lose!"

Gym Leader Candice would like to battle!

"Snover, you're up first! Let's do this!"

A cool little tree pokemon covered in snow appears on the battlefield!

...and it begins to Hail soon afterwards as Snover's Snow Warning triggers and the gym's 'sprinklers' on the ceiling start dropping snow and ice on the battlefield!  While the weather is in effect, all Ice types get +2 Defense, and all non-Ice types will take 1 damage at the end of the Round!

Initiatives:
Snover: (2) + 10 = 12
Magneton: (5) + 5 = 10

Magneton just isn't fast enough to outspeed Candice's pokemon!
