Karen swiches, "Go! Nidorina!"

Candice's eyes become as big as dinner plates.

"...three Silver Prints?! Okay, I want to hear aaaaallll about that after we're done battling!"

Candice's next pokemon is a Piloswine!  Did Karen make a good switch, or not?  We're going to find out fairly soon...

Round 2 Initiatives:
Nidorina: (5) + 8 = 13
Piloswine: (2) + 10 = 12

For pokemon that look really slow, that Snover and this Piloswine sure are quick on this icy battlefield!  Nidorina is barely managing to outpace that super hairy pokemon!

Nidorina's growling competitively at the female Piloswine.  +1 Strength from Rivalry.

Karen vs Candice Round 2

Crunch 1
(3)(3)(6)(5)
Piloswine has 3 Defense
(6)(6)(4)(4)(4) Piloswine takes 5 damage! 4/9 HP -2 Pain
(3)

Piloswine stomps on the arena floor, causing it to shake uncontrollably!

Earthquake!!! 1
10 base - 2 - 2 Pain = 6 D6
(4)(6)(2)(5)(2)(5)
3 Str + 4 Pow + STAB - 3 Def + SE = 5 D6 + 1 damage
(3)(2)(2)(5)(5) Nidorina takes 3 damage! 4/7 HP -1 Pain

Nidorina bites her rival again in retaliation!

Poison Fang 2
(6) It hits!  *chomp*
(6)(1)(4)(3)(5)(6) Piloswine takes 3 damage! 1/9 HP -3 Pain
(5)(5)(2)(5)(3) No Poison, unfortunately.

Piloswine retaliates!  She shakes her fur, and boatloads of snow fall out of it!

Avalanche!! 2
10 - 4 - 3 = 3 D6
(1)(5)(1)  Miss!  Nidorina is able to back up enough to avoid the attack entirely.

Piloswine still has one more move that Candice wanted her to use since the Round hasn't ended yet.

Hail 3
11 - 6 - 3 = 2 D6
(2)(1) ...but Piloswine is too Pained to summon any weather right now, so she just stands there, breathing heavily.

"Yikes, that Nidorina is strong.  Hang in there, Piloswine!"

Piloswine stays in, as Candice is not allowed to switch pokemon in official Gym Battles.  Does Karen switch, or does Nidorina (who currently has an advantage) get to try to finish off her rival?  If you don't switch, go ahead and send your orders for Round 3.

I'm going to leave an important note on multi-hit moves in the meta thread, btw.

Randolph heard out his styling spook of a partner out without interruption, nodding along at the what he felt were appropriate points in their speech. He could understand the desire to vocalize their thoughts/opinions in order to help better finalize them and come to a conclusion, and this was a fairly big decision he was foisting upon them on short notice, so deliberating on the matter didn't bother him at all.

When Kogeki decided to go ahead and let him build a new arm for him from the ground up, the midget man gave a decisive nod and crossed his arms, looking as serious as a person of his stature could be.

"It'll be done, then. 'Preciate you being flexible and understanding, especially since I know this ain't an easy decision to make on short notice. At least you'll still keep your friend's prosthetic in one piece as a keepsake, or backup if you or something else scraps your new shiny arm. *Looks even more serious* On that note, don't be a reckless idiot with your new arm, when ya get it. Building and maintaining it will be hard work, since its a custom job with fancy and rare parts, so if you end up wrecking it beyond repair in the field, their isn't a Heatran damn thing I or you can do to salvage it. That, and if you break it because of a stupid reason, I WILL tear you a new one. *Hard look* Understand?"

Since the cyborg ninja agreed to spend more time with Ran looking for the parts, that is exactly what they'll be doing! Ran will start by going to the local hospitals, as if there is any place with neuroscientist specialists and Neuro Sensor Parts in stock, it would be there! Afterwards, he'd head to a metal/scrap shop and buy/figure out the cost of twice the amount of material he thinks he'll need to build a Robo Arm for Kogeik (as have spare supplies when crafting a brand new design is always a smart idea). If the above two things don't constitute a full Encounter, he'd also try to find a tech head at a computer cafe of some sort in the city, as those would be the places to find someone able to program/teach him to program a arm!

The matter of selling/not selling Crobat will come later, so let's not focus on that now.
Like the wind, I come and go as I please... but I am always there to provide a comforting breeze.

Karen vs Candice Round 3

This should be a quick Round.

Double Kick 1 and 2
(4)(2)(2) 1 success
(5)
Hit 2 times!

Candice had been hoping that Nidorina didn't know Double Kick, so Piloswine attempts an...

Avalanche Clash!!
11 base - 2 - 3 = 6 D6
(5)(3)(6)(6)(2)(4) = 4 successes

The clash is successful, so the first hit of Double Kick can't add its power to the attack.

The problem is that first hit still connects in the first place due to the nature of Clashing, and thus is able to do Super Effective damage.

Nidorina's swift kicks blast apart the snow that Piloswine was building up around herself for protection!  But that's just a lengthy way of saying...

Piloswine faints.

"...aw man.  You did well, Piloswine.  Get some well deserved rest."

Candice recalls Piloswine and holds up her next pokeball.

"Whew.  Is it just me, or is it getting hot in here? I think I need to send in a pokemon that's able to cool your friends down a little.  It's time to get serious!~"

Is Karen switching pokemon, or is Nidorina staying in?

Candice sends out her...Medicham?

"What?  Yes, I KNOW she's not an Ice type.  I actually decided to raise a Medicham to try and learn a bit more about the Fighting type!  Besides, Medicham LOVES doing some super serious yoga in the middle of a snowstorm.  Only the most hardcore Black Belts and Battle Girls are able to do that kind of training, you know!"

Round 4 Initiatives
Medicham: (5) + 10 = 15
Shiny Rapidash: (6) + 7 = 13

Don't forget that pokemon can also learn new moves/increase their stats in the middle of a battle so long as they have the appropriate amount of experience to do so.

Karen vs Candice Round 4

Medicham flexes, getting herself warmed up for the fight!

Bulk Up 1
3 Tough + 4 Contest + 3 Intimidate - 2 = 8 D6
(4)(3)(3)(3)(2)(1)(5)(1) +1 Strength and Defense for Medicham!

Rapidash has no complaints about using her favorite moves at full power!  The grey fires blaze bright amid the icy cold of the arena as Rapidash melts most of the ice around her while she charges forward at full speed!

Flame Charge 1
(6)(5)(5)(1)(1)(4)(5)(3) Almost a crit, but Medicham fluidly deflects part of the blow at the very last second.
Medicham has 5* Defense after Bulk Up.
(6)(4) Medicham takes 2 damage! 7/9 HP -1 Pain
+1 Dexterity for Rapidash

The moment Rapidash makes contact, Medicham presses her palm into the horse's side with force in an attempt to slow her down!

Force Palm 2
10 - 1 - 4 = 5 D6
(6)(4)(4)(2)(1)
5* Strength (Pure/Huge Power grants +1 Strength in this game) + 2 Power + STAB - 3 Defense = 5 D6
(6)(5)(3)(1)(6) Rapidash takes 3 damage! 6/9 HP -1 Pain
(6)(1)(3) Rapidash is Paralyzed! -2 Dex

(2)(1)(1)  Nope.

L: (4)(4)
D: (4)(2)(3)

Okay, I guess she'll use a weaker attack now.  Candice looks a little confused about why you'd order a Rapidash to use such a basic attack, though.  But the positive part?  It shows Karen is actually able to control this wild horse, so yay, I guess?

Tackle 2
(5)(2)(1)(2)
(2) No damage as Rapidash just bounces off of Medicham's open palm.

Medicham's turn, and she's using a move that'll hopefully keep her ready for that Nidorina should it come back out!

Zen Headbutt 3
(6)(6)(5)
(6)(2)(1)(6)(3)(4) Rapidash takes 3 damage! 3/9 HP -2 Pain
(2)(1)(3)

(6)(5)(3) Fwoosh!  Medicham is Burned 1 by Flame Body!

More FIRE!!!

Flare Blitz 3
(5)
(4)(2)(1)(2)(5) Medicham takes 2 damage! 5/9 HP -1 Pain
(3)(5) Rapidash takes 1 damage 2/9 HP -2 Pain
(6) FWOOSH!  Medicham is Burned 3!

(GM's note: as long as you aren't intentionally trying to kill a Gym Leader's pokemon, using Lethal damage against them is generally allowed because Gym Battles are a controlled environment where medical attention is within easy reach. Using Lethal damage outside of League officiated battles is generally discouraged. In general, though, always be careful with Lethal damage)

"Oh no, Medicham!  We need to end this quickly, before that horse burns us to a crisp!"

Despite being set entirely aflame, Medicham is fighting back twice as hard!

Ice Punch 4 (Medicham is required to use at least one Ice move since she's part of an Ice gym, after all)
10 - 8 - 1 = 1 D6
(5)
(1)(2)(4)(1)(2) No damage for the fire horse!
(6) She is Frozen solid, however!

This seems like a good time to mention how Freeze will work in this game.  I reread the mechanics in the book, and it says that the pokemon can only attempt to break out of the ice at the END of the Round.  If they can use a move Super Effective against Ice, they can break out immediately at that time.  Otherwise, they have to make a Strength check to break free.  (the book doesn't specify how many successes are needed to break free)

Fortunately, it doesn't matter in this case, as Rapidash does NOT want to stay Frozen solid, and thus learns Ember on the spot (it's one of Rapidash's 0 exp moves) of her own accord and uses it to melt the Ice Block instantaneously! (it does, however, count against the 4 move limit for this battle, so Rapidash has used all 4 of her moveslots now)

Medicham doesn't have enough Vitality to resist the Burn 3, so she takes 3 Lethal damage!  2/6 HP -2 Pain (3 Lethal)

Does Karen switch pokemon?  Medicham is guaranteed to faint at the end of Round 5.
