[Game Thread] Pokerole: Mount Coronet Mystery

He has to try hard NOT to smile at her change in attitude. It wouldn't give the right impression, after all.

Unlike her, he doesn't need to think over his decision, only giving Candice a solemn nod.

"Fair enough. I accept your bargain. My investigations won't do me any good if I get myself or my partners killed while snooping around, so making sure I can handle the wee beasties of the Temple by having a row with ya is a sound idea. Can ya promise me this, though, Candice: If I can't explore that place for answers, you'll get someone to do it at some point. This is problem with Mt. Coronet is a bigger problem than anyone of us, I fear, and it'll need to be dealt soon if we don't want our homelands to go hell in a hand-basket. Or worse."

*Shakes head*

" If ya can't do that, however, I understand. This whole rotten deal ain't your problem unless you're begging for it, and I shan't force it on ya if you don't want anything to do with it.
Frankly, I wouldn't blame ya if you told me to fuck off now and stop bothering you or Snowpoint about this. I certainly don't want to deal with this myself, but I have to, 'cause if nobody does anything about it, nothing is going to get done about it but jack all."

Well, this is....uncharacteristically diplomatic of Randolph. He's pretty much giving her an out dealing with this whole mess. Guess despite his desires to solve this problem and get his job done, he doesn't want to drag anyone else into it unless they're good, ready, and willing to.

If she still wants to battle him, though, he'll make his way to his side of the arena, and his first choice of Pokemon will be Puck. Ready to begin when you are.....or not!

"If you're accompanied by someone who's proven to me that they're able to handle themselves already, I can maybe let you into the Temple even if you don't defeat me, so long as I feel you can also handle yourself.  I'll go and check it out myself later when I have the time as well.  I don't want to see something causing Sinnoh trouble any more than you do. And if something might be affecting the Temple, it's definitely my problem, given the Snowpoint Gym Leader traditionally watches over it."

Pretty reasonable, right?

Candice makes her way back over to her side of the arena and gets ready for battle!

Given that you specifically approached her to try and get access to the Snowpoint Temple, Candice is gonna be starting off with a slightly more difficult pokemon than usual. The rules are the same as before!

Gym Leader Candice would like to battle! (Fun Fact: her sprite from Diamond and Pearl is different from her Platinum one)

Candice's first pokemon is a Glalie!  "Show 'em how we run things around her, Glalie!"

Round 1 Initiatives
Glalie: (2) + 10 = 12
Puck the Mawile: (3) + 6 = 9

Puck's Intimidate activates, decreasing Glalie's Strength by 1!

Indeed it does!

"Heh, your bargain is sounding downright generous right now, but I ain't complaining! Everything's settled, then! Mögen die Besten von uns siegen, Candice - May the best of us prevail."

Fast-forward a scene, and out comes Puck the Mawile, striking a coy but menacing pose as he smiles deviously at the Glalie before him with both mouths. Oh, he's fighting an Ice type, is he now? Well, isn't that a cool deal - for him.

Soon after his Intimidating pose takes effect, Ran wastes no time issuing orders!

"Puck, mess with that Glalie a bit, before hitting them hard and then hunkering down! Don't underestimate your opponent here, or it will bite'cha harder than YOU can yourself!"

Orders: Knock Off, Power Up Punch, and Iron Defense for the spritely fae, in that Order please! If Glalie uses Protect at any point before Puck's Third Action, though, he'll just use Iron Defense then to set up in there face, and move the Move that would be perform then to the next possible Action. If it would be impossible to perform said Move, a Will Point will be conditionally spent to give it + 1 Success. If its possible to use Items in a Gym Battle (Specifically Potions), Puck will get one (A Potion) if his HP fall at or bellow 1/2 its Max Value right before he preforms his next Action.

That the starter plans for this Round! Will magical Steel yet again withstand the supernatural Ice? Let's find out!!!

Randolph vs Candice Round 1

No trainer items in this Gym Battle, I'm afraid!  It's all hold items!

Glalie's protecting herself, but not how Randolph was expecting her to!  Glalie's glaring at Puck as she sets herself and the rest of her team up for success.

Hail 1
11 - 2 = 9 D6
(6)(4)(2)(3)(4)(4)(4)(2)(4)
It began to Hail!  +2 Defense for all Ice types!

Puck immediately tells Glalie to stop that!  With physical, disciplinary action!

Knock Off 1
(6)(5)(3)(3)(2)(6) Glalie drops her Charti Berry!
Glalie has 5* Defense after the Hail
3 + 2 + 2 Knock Off! - 5* = 2 D6
(6)(4) Glalie takes 2 damage! 8/10 HP -1 Pain

"My pokemon might have a reputation as Physical attackers, but we have Special Attacks, too, ya know!  Freeze 'em, Glalie!"

Blizzard! 2
10 - 4 - 1 = 5 D6
(6)(6)(2)(2)(3)
4 Spe + 5 Pow + STAB - 2 Sp Def - NVE = 8 D6 - 1 damage
(3)(3)(3)(3)(6)(1)(3)(1) Candice has some really terrible luck, apparently.  Puck takes no damage as he manages to withstand the storm.
(2)

"Oh come on!  We can do better than this, Glalie!"

Puck's rather pleased as he gets to punch out this icy rock's lights almost unopposed, though!

Power Up Punch 2
(5)(2)(5)(2)
(1) Glalie takes 1 damage 7/10 HP -1 Pain
+1 Strength for Puck as his jaws snap menacingly.

"Try that again, Glalie!"

Ice Beam 3
(2)(6)(5)
(4)(3)(3)(2)(6)(3) Puck takes 1 damage 7/8 HP
(5)

Puck hunkers down and hardens his hide, ready to weather any further assaults, Special or not!

Iron Defense 3
(5)(5)(6)
+2 Defense for Puck!

Glalie tries to bite into the Mawile for her last action!  A futile endeavor, maybe, but a potentially important one!

Crunch 4
10 - 8 - 1 = 1 D6
(4) Nom
3* Str + 3 Pow - 6* Def - NVE = 1 D6 - 1
(-) Puck can't be damaged by this attack unless it crits.
(1) Nope

The Hail falls relentlessly.  Puck takes 1 damage. 6/8 HP -1 Pain

(Forgetting about Puck's Lefties, mate! That's + 1 HP, No Pain!)

With keen eyes and a sharp intellectual, Randolph was able to deduce what Miss Jackie Frost's Glalie's role was for the team: Hail Setting + Mixed Offensive coverage. A nasty combination to fortify her team, and prevent her opponent from walling the living hunk of Ice one way or another.

'Hm.....she's used her 4 Moves for it, though, so they're ain't anymore tricks it can pull. Something that I'll exploit to the fullest.'

Meanwhile, the ironclad fairy was just having a blast against his foe, tittering as they tried their darnest to actually warp their metal with their gelid blasts and sharp teeth, but to no avail. Cold nuthin was going to work on it, frosty muffin.

After spending only a few seconds thinking, the bristly blacksmith had a plan of action, and it went something like so:

"Puck get ready to dive out! If they manage to put the Freeze on ya, though, you know what to do!"

Orders: Time to Baton Pass to Stymph! If Puck's Frozen, then at the end of the Round they'll use Power-Up Punch to break the ice instantly! Time to toss the torch to someone else more capable of walling mixed offenses!

Moves:

Baton Pass!
Accuracy: 7 Will + 2 Accuracy (Single Action) = 9D6 Dice
Effect: All Boosts (+ 1 STR, + 2 DEF) go to Stymph!

Conditional Order: Power-Up Punch if Frozen

Randolph vs Candice Round 2

Glalie's going for max damage this Round!

Blizzard! 1
(6)(4)(5)(1)(2)(1)(2)
(6)(6)(1)(2)(4)(1)(2)(2) Puck takes 1 damage 6/8 HP -1 Pain
(2) Nope, not stopping that BP like that, apparently!

Baton Pass!
(2)(1)(3)(1)(2)(5)(4)(1) The Blizzard almost bowled Puck over and disrupted his concentration, but no way is he letting these buffs go to waste!
Puck passes the baton to Stymph the Skarmory! She screeches a sharp sounding battle cry!

The Round ends right then and there since the original combatant that Glalie was facing is no longer on the field.

"...dang it.  I KNEW I should have worked on my strategies for facing Steel types a bit more...guess I'm going to have to pull out all the stops for this one!  Soften them up as much as you can, Glalie!"

The hail falls relentlessly.  Stymph takes 1 damage. 8/9 HP

Puck's Leftovers do not trigger this time since he is no longer on the battlefield.

Round 3 Initiatives
Glalie: 12
Stymph: (4) + 7 = 11

Stymph has +2 Defense and +1 Strength!  What's she going to do with those buffs?

Whoops, forgot an important detail about Glalie.

She has Ice Body for her Ability.

That means that at the start of Round 3, she's got 9/10 HP and No Pain.  My bad! It doesn't change any of the current rolls, though.

Why, use them to BUFF EVEN MORE!

"Hah hah, good old fashion cunning beats brute force most of the time, Candice, but they can for a fine marriage! Let me further demonstrate that to ya: Stymph, whip up a updraft, then prepare to hit them HARD AS YA CAN!"

The armored falconess screeches out a boastful, approving war cry, before kicking right into motion! She was always hungry for a good fight, and it looked like her opponent was going to make for a fine meal! BRING IT ON, COLD ONE!

Order: Tailwind in order to give them more DEX + put them on top of the Initiative (If it would miss, conditional Will Point will be spent!), and then either of the following line-up:
- If Glalie manages to deal 4 or more Damage to Stymph with their first attack, then she'll use a Will Powered Roost (Again, if it would miss without it) to heal up and remove her Flying type to tank the next Ice Move (If they follow up with another one).
- If they deal less than that, proceed with Steel Wing as her second Action!
- If she's at less than 1/2 Health after their 2nd Attack, Will Point Roost (If Miss, WILL!) to heal as her third and final Action for the Round. Otherwise, Drill Peck!
- Increasing Nature and Channel to 2 for 12 XP, since I can afford to and I NEED Tailwind and Roost to get of without the use of Will, if Freeze don't mess things up!
- If Frozen, then Steel Wing at the End of the Round.

That'll do! Ride of the Steel Valkyrie, engage!

Moves:

Tailwind
Accuracy: DEX (3) + Fight (3) + Channel (2) - 2 Actions - Maybe 1 - 2 = 5/4D6
Effect: + 2 DEX for the entire team! *Fwoosh!*

Steel Wing
Accuracy: DEX (*5) + Fight (3) + Brawl (3) - 1 Accuracy - 4 Actions - 1/2 Pain = 5/4D6 Dice
Damage: STR (*5) + 3 + STAB + Metal Coat + SE - *5 VIT = 5D6+ 1 Damage
Effect: *Defense Drop 1 [1]*

Drill Peck
Accuracy: 11D6 - 6 Action - 1/2 Pain = 4/3D6 Dice
Damage: 4D6 Damage
Effect: None, but its Lethal (No need to make it that way, though, since they don't have Heals)

Roost (Conditional)
Accuracy: Varies (Base is VIT [3 or 5]+ Survival + Nature = 9/7D6 Dice)
Effect: Restore up 1/2 Max HP, Removes Flying type

Randolph vs Candice Round 3

Glalie's orders are still rather straightforward!

DAMAGE! (hopefully)

Blizzard 1
(6)(2)(3)(1)(1)(3)(4)(6)
(5)(6)(4)(1)(6)(4)(1) Stymph takes 4 damage! 4/9 HP -2 Pain
(4) Nope

Stymph flaps her wings, summoning a gust of wind!

Tailwind 1
(4)(4)(5)(1)
A Tailwind blows from behind Randolph's team! +2 Dex for all!  Stymph's now going first!

Something that she's promptly going to take advantage of!

Roost 2
Vitality is replaced with the base value of Defense or Health, whichever is higher.  So it's 4 in this case.
4 + 2 + 2 Nature (make sure to update your character sheet to reflect this change, along with any Will Points spent!) - 4 - 2 = 2 D6
(2)(3) Conditional Will Point spent to add a success!
(5)(5)(3)(1)(5) Stymph recovers 3 HP and loses her Flying type until her next action!  Spend another Will Point since that was a Basic Heal! 7/9 HP -1 Pain

More ice!  Glalie's just trying to do as much damage as possible right now!

Ice Beam 2
(5)(4)(4)(6)(5)(4) Oof, and she is doing so with a VENGEANCE.  The icy ray definitely knocks loose more than a few steel feathers!  Critical hit!
(6)(3)(3)(2)(4)(2)(1) Stymph still only takes 1 damage, as feathers were all it knocked loose. 6/9 HP -1 Pain
(4) Still nope

Stymph takes off again!  Time to retaliate!  She screeches as she divebombs her opposition, following the orders to the letter!

Drill Peck 3
(6)(1)(5)(5)
(6)(6)(5)(3) Glalie takes 3 Lethal damage! 6/7 HP (3 Lethal) -1 Pain again

Glalie bites down on the bird as she flies past.

Crunch 3
(6)(1)(3)
Intimidate isn't in effect any more.
4 + 3 - 5* = 2 D6
(4)(1) Stymph takes 1 damage. 5/9 HP -1 Pain
(6) -1 Defense for Stymph! (Net +1)

The hail continues to fall.  Stymph takes 1 damage.  4/9 HP -1 Pain
Glalie's Ice Body restores 1 HP! 7/7 HP (3 Lethal) -1 Pain

Candice is watching that steel bird more carefully now that she knows it has Roost.

(Since Glalie has Ice Body, Drill Peck is Lethal, in order to prevent them from easily healing off the Damage [Ran would have noticed that, and taken measures against it]. If I had known it had that Ability earlier, I'd have changed my strategy completely. I don't LIKE having to use LD, but if I don't, then Candice has good chances to outstrip me and win with just her first Pokemon alone.)

Ran small grin sharply turns into a frown when he realized that Candice's Glalie was a healing from the Hail failing down, and so was forced to use....less than savory tactics in order to stigemy its effectiveness. Fair and disdainful of using such tactics he usually was, when something important was on the line, he was willing to stoop to very low levels in order to accomplish his objectives. He couldn't afford to lose to Miss Jackie Frost easily, so he couldn't afford to be easy on her in any way on her too.

"Took me a bit to figure out that strategy with that Glalie of yours, and I have to say that is a right nasty combination you had going with it. So I had and have to take pickaxe and break it apart. If the threat you're posing now is anything like what the Temple is packing, then I say my actions are warranted. Hope ya can forgive me later lass, but if not.....I understand."

(If I remember correctly, Lethal Damage is Okay in Gym Battles, so long as it does not end up killing the Pokemon later or your actively trying to murder them instead of just using it to help you win. Correct me if I misremembered this!)

He then grows even more severe as he barks out his next set of commands for his ironclad valkyrie!

"Stymph, Drill right into them, and don't spare any mercy doing so, then adjust your plans accordingly! You're an ace at combat, so I'll leave the tactics in your capable wings!"

Orders: Since I had the misfortune to discover that Glalie DID in fact have healing in the form of Ice Body too late to account for it, I'm prioritizing making sure it can't use it as effectively anymore. Starting with Drill Peck, then Roost, the finishing with Steel Wing. If they try to Evade Drill Peck, they switch to using Roost at the last minute, then go for Drill Peck in their next Action. Hopefully Stymph will end up finishing them off, or at least heavily denting them enough that the next Pokemon can clean them up.

Moves:

Drill Peck
Accuracy: 11D6 Dice - 2 Actions - 2 Pain = 7D6 Dice
Damage: 4D6
Effect: Lethal Damage (Being Used); If a Crit hit would Kill them, make the Move Non-Lethal if possible, or Hold It Back if not (1/2s Damage)

Roost
Accuracy: 9D6 - 4 Actions - 2/3 = 3/2D6 Dice
Effect: Known

Steel Wing
Accuracy: 11D6 - 6 - 1 = 4D6 Base Dice
Damage and Effect: Known
