He threatened his current purpose for being a trainer in the first place. To prove he's the strongest. If he can't challenge gyms, he can't become Champion. This trainer obviously wishes to exert his dominance over others based on the reactions he had in that battle. It's about time someone taught him that there's those who are stronger than him, even if it's not the person he's currently facing.

I'd say that's pretty much nailing the part about agency and knowing when to fight. Bravo.
